354174 2005-05-12 05:41:00 Keeping an open mind, are there any other countries that are similar to NZ in population density, distribution & terrain etc where broadband is faster and more widely available? If so, there could be a legitimate argument for more avaliability, faster speed and lower prices.

If not, maybe these aggravating issues are simply a consequence of low population numbers, geographic isolation, and plain old commercial economics.

Volume sales reduce prices.

Cheers

There is no doubt that our population and environment has an impact on the cost of our telecoms services. However, most of that cost was covered a fair time back.

There are providers in the States that do business in a similar envirnoment to NZ's. They cover a single state or part thereof. I stumbled on one a while back but can't remember the state.

How do they manage to offer their customers a cheaper deal with better specifications than we can get in NZ, and manage to survive as well? One possibility is, that if they did not provide what they do, they would find someone else moving into their space pretty smartly.

In the absense of a decent memory I checked out Alaska, it's isolated with a harsh environment and topography. One provider offers business DSL at 1.5 Mbps/384 Kbps for US $64.95/month while residential at 1.5Mbps/128Kbps is at US $39.95/month. You'll need to check the Big Mac ratio to bring that in line with NZ cost of living and wages rather than do a straight currency conversion. There are no caps and of the few providers I looked at VOIP, movies, video, gaming, et al is encouraged.

That doesn't look fantastcally different on the residential front until you look at the speed, the business rates on the other hand are clearly light years away from our miserable existence. I imagine theses guys are having to pay for some very durable cables from Alaska to the homeland as well.

That's just outright disingenuous .

You also have no idea who on this board has or has not, made complaints or submissions on telcoms matters .

If you really want to know, yes .

NZguy, we're talking about (so called) broadband costs and specifications, ie, bang for ytou buck . Not faults or txt or mobile services but, as you mention it, NZ's mobile rates aren't too flash either .

354180 2005-05-12 07:40:00 I was thinking more along the lines of Growly :nerd:

Metla, I love you, but there I just have to say a couple of things:

Don't ever forget my name or username ever again.
Telecom is simply fantastic. Ofcourse I only I think so because the discount our bill every month and because they've given me many many valuable things in the past. I also receive a cheque from them each month with payment for my frequently blatant and ridiculous glorification .

354181 2005-05-12 07:42:00 I agree with Growly

GO TELECOM!
