653291 2008-03-27 08:19:00 Ive noticed firefox will start to hog the ram if you have several tabs open with flash video or streaming video

the link below notes ways to help firefox reduce unecessary usage

internetducttape.com

try some of the tricks there! works wonders for me.

653292 2008-03-27 08:46:00 I have F1, Stuff, NZ City Personal page running all the time F/F is open. Maybe I should reduce those to see what occurs

There is your problem, try closing the Stuff tab, when your CPU usage goes up & see if that helps.

Maybe even try disabling flash & see how that goes.

Let me know how you get on.

653293 2008-03-27 08:47:00 Its shouldn't be the sites, I have PCworld open on two tabs, stuff, telstra, Xtra, snapfiles, and Microsoft - CPU running at 3% & its only a P4 3.0

Are you blocking any of the ads?

653294 2008-03-27 09:44:00 Good point with F/F. I may switch back to IE 6 (I'm on windows 2000). F/F uses 40MB memory on mine without any plugins installed apart from Flash and none others, I just redid my HDD.

MSN Messenger uses 8MB on mine.

653295 2008-03-27 09:52:00 Get any Beta version of FF3 and see the difference. It is atleast 80-85% more efficient in terms of memory usage.

Oh and also, FF's RAM usage is always going to look worse under how XP calculates it. Vista's Task Manager will give you a much better idea of how much it is ACTUALLY using.

653296 2008-03-27 20:13:00 Stu

I have read "The other big cause of memory problems with Firefox is Flash… but apparently that was fixed in the latest Flash update."

Just as a matter of interest Stu, how do you disable flash??

I also understand that F/f 3 is out soon and that will fix most problems. In the meantime I have disabled all Addons and will enable them one at a time to see if these are causing the problem. Also, you could be right about about Stuff so will see later if that is the culprit.

Hey thanks guys/gals for your replies. Much appreciated. :thanks

653297 2008-03-27 20:29:00 Are you blocking any of the ads? Not on Press F1, but ad block is installed, and working on other sites, I have white listed PF1 as I did have problems with it loading if I blocked them.

BUT I am also using more and more IE7 Pro, with no problems as even now PF1 sometimes has problems loading FF ( may just be mine) but it just updated yesterday to the latest version. IE7 Pro has more features I like as default than FF - hence its usage.
