653690 2008-03-28 19:03:00 I have a Windows ME comp here that had Nortons installed long ago.

After booting up a message would appear along the lines of "Integrator could not be started". A Google took me to the Symantec site which advised that the Nortons Removal Tool be used to remove Nortons and it be reinstalled.

The removal tool was duly commissioned and for good measure I went through the hard drive and deleted the remaining Symantec and Nortons folders.

Now, however, after booting up I get a message "Error: Could not launch C:\Progra~1\Common~1\Symant~1\nmain.exe /DAT:C:\Progra~1\Norton~1\SWPLUGIN.NSI".

This keeps on popping up and will probably continue to do so until I can track down what service or app is demanding these files.

Does anyone know where I can find the culprit? There is nothing in msconfig's Startup or the Win.ini or Sys.ini files or anywhere I can see. There are a few Norton entries in the Registry that I am tempted to just delete but I'm not sure whether doing so will break anything else. I like to tread carefully in the Registry!

Any ideas?

653691 2008-03-28 19:09:00 Did you look in program files / common files / symantec folder?

Ummm use ccleaner and see if that removes any trace of it, and use its startup option

653692 2008-03-28 19:15:00 I would export those particular registry keys as a back up and then delete them. See if that fixes it.

You would have thought the Norton's removal tool should have cleaned up more thoroughly.

Speedy: I deleted the Symantec folders/files out of Common Files which is why the error message was popping up - it couldn't find the deleted files . What I wanted was to find and delete whatever was looking for them in the first place .

I had already tried CCleaner which was no help but taking a slasher to the Registry fixed it .

Jen: Nortons removal tool is known for not removing everything so I wasn't surprised it was no help .

653694 2008-03-28 23:03:00 Yep, in this situation I generally go commando through the registry, and hack and slash at anything symantec or norton.

Back it up first of course.

If you do a search in the registry for nmain.exe and SWPLUGIN.NSI and remove all references to them, then run HJT and remove any references to them there, it should, to all intents and purposes, be gone.

653696 2008-03-29 20:41:00 I spoke too soon. It just takes longer before the error message shows itself. :(

Where the heck can this thing be hiding?? :badpc:

653697 2008-03-30 04:29:00 What about WinME's task scheduler? I'm pretty sure WinME has one of those and it might be trying to launch from that. Jen (38)
653698 2008-03-30 04:48:00 Norton just likes your computer too much lol beeswax34 (63)
