653281 2008-03-27 07:05:00 Hi folks

I have been frustrated recently with a computer that has been very sluggish at times. Could not work out what the problem was until I opened Task Manager and found the CPU working at 100% - and the one program causing the problem - Firefox.. It was at times showing 97% of CPU. When I closed F/f the computer was a lot faster in operation..

I did not realize that F/f was such a resource hog. If I uninstalled and reinstalled F/f, would this help??

If I did do the above would I lose all my settings in F/f as well as my Bookmarks?

O/S Win XP with SP2

TIA

653282 2008-03-27 07:21:00 Uninstalling and re-installing won't change a thing IMO (so it's not a certainty) largely because on re-install of Firefox you'll find it set up exactly as it was before uninstall due to profiles.

Extreme CPU usage (aside from RAM usage) would probably be due to some add-on or combination of add-ons so try disabling all add-ons and see how that goes, enabling one at a time after some period, there might even be an obvious add-on which sounds resource hungry. I try to keep my add-ons below 5 as these don't magically work without using system resources.

653283 2008-03-27 07:26:00 If you close F/F is it sweet .. all fast and smooth?
When you go to task manager - how much physical RAM is left available?

653285 2008-03-27 07:32:00 To See if its FF add in causing your high usage, try this - click start/All programs / look for the Mozilla Firefox Folder in the list of installed programs, then select Firefox (safe Mode) this will load FF with all add in and themes disabled, if the PC runs OK, and in task manager FF is not Hogging the power you need to disable all add ins then start 1 at a time until the culprit is found. wainuitech (129)
653286 2008-03-27 07:32:00 When does your CPU usage go up? What site/s where you on when this happens??

As at the moment there is an Ad (it’s a telecom ad) on a lot of the sites like Stuff, NZ Herald etc… & I have found it uses 100% of my CPU.

Yes closing F/F is fast and smooth. When you refer to physical RAM how do you pick up that figure in Task Manager?? My computer has 1 gig Ram

Thanks Sal will try what you suggest.

653288 2008-03-27 07:36:00 Stu.

I have F1, Stuff, NZ City Personal page running all the time F/F is open. Maybe I should reduce those to see what occurs

653289 2008-03-27 07:37:00 update to post #5 if FF runs Ok in safe mode, open FF, select tools/Add ons/ Extensions and disable each Ad on by clicking it / disable , re - enable 1 at a time and sooner or later one will cause the problem.

I have F1, Stuff, NZ City Personal page running all the time F/F is open. Maybe I should reduce those to see what occurs Its shouldn't be the sites, I have PCworld open on two tabs, stuff, telstra, Xtra, snapfiles, and Microsoft - CPU running at 3% & its only a P4 3.0

Have just run it in safe mode and it is running okay. Must be something in the addons or extensions alright. Will do what you suggest and take it from there.

:thanks to all that have replied
