654559 2008-03-31 08:08:00 Hi Guys

I am sick of DVD-R and DVD+R's toasters !

I have been using the home brand at New World and Sony ones.

About a quarter of the DVD's I burn turn to toast.

But I have used Sony DVD RW's for years and have never had a failure !

It makes me want to use DVD RW's all the time, they are dearer but at least they work 100% of the time.

654560 2008-03-31 08:13:00 I've used Princo, Laser, and Imation DVDR's.

At the mo, I'm using Imation DVDR+ 8x's

Never had a prob with either of them.

Must be what youre burning with, or how youre burning them

654561 2008-03-31 08:56:00 Saying that DVD RW's work all the time is completely wrong. Their failure rate is just as high as any other format.

Its definitely the brand(s) you use. My Sony DVD's have never failed.

I mean lets be honest, New World DVD's vs Sony DVD RW's and you're complaining about the supermarket ones not being completely reliable?

654562 2008-03-31 09:02:00 I've used Princo ones for a number of years, and they've been fine. They're relatively cheap too, compared to "brand name" varieties. somebody (208)
654563 2008-03-31 09:09:00 I've brought blank cdrs, and dvdr's from Foodtown, never had a prob with them

However, I brought some Imation LS blank cdr's, (down the road from me).

2 were fine (I burned to them fine, and did a LS label).

I tried 2 more, they burned fine but the label, when I went to print to it screwed up.

I dont know if this was coz the blanks were stuffed (the label side) or the burner I was using was playing up. (even tho it burned video to DVD and data to cd's, no prob at all)

So, I took the burner back (was still under warranty), and paid $7 extra for a faster one.

I've yet to find out, whether the new burner will print LS labels properly. With the rest of the blank LS cdr's.

654564 2008-03-31 09:09:00 I have had good results with Princo, which is a cheap brand and one I was initially nervous of. Funnily enough I have had a number of problems with Verbatim, which is generally known to be a top brand. My Nero does not seem to like it !

As I said I have never had one Sony DVD RW fail (and I re-format them and re-burn them a lot fro backups etc) !

But a lot of my New World and Sony DVD-R's fail in the same drive and using the same program. About 1 in four fail !

654566 2008-03-31 17:39:00 I found the white blank cd's I was using had a failure rate until I slowed the burning speed down then they are perfect every time. Don't have lightscribe print them in my pixma printer gary67 (56)

Burning at the wrong speed is the main cause of failure.

654568 2008-03-31 20:05:00 Yep - I second what Bantu says. I think that you have unwittingly identified the problem yourself. DVD-+RW will only burn at very slow speed (2 or 4 speed), your DVD-+R disks might be rated at 8x or 16x so "can" be burnt at that speed. That means that under some circumstances they get a lot more errors when written at high speed. Try cutting the write speed back to say 4x - I would expect they will be more likley to work.

I used to buy princo DVD-R disks as well - Burnt lots of them and never had an issue. Read about lots of people rubbishing them and warning how the dyes broke down and how they would work after a few months. I have some that are now around 3 years old and are still ok. Princo was ok for me. I have used verbatim more recently - They always work.

Perhaps check if your dvd burner has any firware upgraded available for it from the manufacturer as well. They sometime release fixes to improve read/write reliability.
