654502 2008-03-31 03:55:00 I have a problem, I can't decide whether to install Vista Ultimate 32 bit or 64 bit. The main advantages of 64 bit is that it can address more memory, but apparently it starts up slower. 64 bit has a extreme lack of drivers, but it is the future. I already have Home Premium installed, and if I installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit. It would be a lot shorter, as everything will already be there. But if I got 64 bit, I will need to reinstall all Windows Updates, SP1, Firewall, Anti Virus etc etc. Any opinions? I don't mind leaving my PC overnight to update by the way. I just want to know the advantages of 64 bit over 32 bit. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
654503 2008-03-31 04:28:00 I don't have Vista but do run XP 64x.

I'd have a good look at the vendor sites of your peripherals, or ones you intend to purchase, like scanners and printers and see if the y support 64 bit drivers.

For e.g. my HP printer driver is utter crap, a beta driver that will never be released or updated (thanks HP you pratts), Canon hasn't even bothered with a driver for my scanner.

So steer clear of the ones that are slow to come up with decent drivers.

Firewalls and AV are another you should check out. NOD32 runs fine. Comodo (64) ran horribly, really sssssssllllllllllllllllloooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww w and buggy as hell (caveat, they may have fixed, I've no been back since giving it the boot months back).

Another beneit apart from the memory is that there is less malware that is written for 64x. This will change in time.

654504 2008-03-31 04:39:00 Well, I did some research, Nvidia was great providing all the 64 bit drivers. Creative Tech also had drivers. But my Monitor doesn't seem to have them, and so I might not be able to reach its native resolution (1680 x 1050). All my other stuff is fine but its the monitor that pisses me off. I hate non-native resolutions. Ah well, I'll stick with 32 bit one last time, Windows 7 will definitely be 64 bit for me. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
654505 2008-03-31 04:49:00 If yove got compatible video drivers, thats good enough.

Monitors dont usually have drivers.

And work regardless of whether theres drivers for it, or not

Its the video card drivers that matter not the monitor's.

654506 2008-03-31 04:58:00 I run 64bit home premium and as well as allowing more RAM it also allows you to use more than 2 cores.

As for firewall I am just using the windows one customized as all the 64bit ones I tried all turned to custard in one way or another.

Antivirus I am using clamwin as it does not interfere with anything.

I have not had any problems with drivers or with allot of my legacy apps and those that have given me any major problems I run in a VPC session.

Monitor is no problem plug & play takes good care of that.

Hope been of some help.

654507 2008-03-31 04:59:00 There don't appear to be any worries with the nVidia drivers. Murray P (44)
654508 2008-03-31 05:33:00 I had the same problem I eventually went with 64 and overall still think it is the best choice. As for slower start up I havnt noticed it at all my current rig has been the fastest booting pc i have had so far.
as far as compatibility goes I have run into a few minor problems the only one that even bothered me really was zone alarms lack of a 64bit secuirty suite, now im running avast and comodo fire wall and it been great.
So i say go for the 64bit install I dont think you will regret it.

32bit can also run 4 cores!

654511 2008-03-31 09:00:00 Hmmm, ok, I'll go 64bit clean install... no PC for at least a day then. But at least I'll be able to upgrade more. I hate it when I reinstall my games, there are so many patches. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
