654421 2008-03-30 22:15:00 I've got a pretty old 5.25" Quantum Bigfoot hard drive that I'd like to retrieve some data from (some old uni stuff), before I discard it. Can you suggest what I do to get the stuff using my current P4 3.00 WinXP Pro SP1 system?

Thanks for any advice.

654422 2008-03-30 22:24:00 Connect it as a slave, or master, if there's nothing on secondary master IDE Speedy Gonzales (78)
654423 2008-03-30 22:25:00 Plug it in as slave and file copy what you want. pctek (84)
654424 2008-03-31 01:16:00 Thx Speedy and PCtek... but easier said than done. It's too big to fit into any drive bays.

[edit] My bad... I got the dimensions wrong... my eyes fail me!

It's about 8" by 5 1/2"

What I was looking at was a series... 5.25 series

654425 2008-03-31 01:17:00 Well connect it from outside the case.

Or chuck it in a 5 1/4 bay, (where cd's/dvd's go), then it'll fit

You don't need to physically install it in a bay. Its temporary.
Although it should fit in a CD bay.
Just take the side off your case, plug it in and let it dangle nowhere in particular while you retrieve your stuff.

654428 2008-03-31 02:51:00 Attach cable and leave it on the floor or table .. where it reaches - copy files and then deattach it. Nomad (952)

654430 2008-04-08 00:20:00 Well I got around to trying to transfer the data today, and what a let-down.

First I had to disconnect the dvd drive so that I could have a molex and ide cable reach the Bigfoot drive resting on the top of the case.

I set the drive as slave on the secondary ide.

Booted up and the drive wasn't recognised. It didn't even appear in the boot screen. The drive itself was running, with a blinking light on the visible part of its circuit board.

Windows loaded up, but the drive wasn't visible in any of Windows Explorer, Disk Manager or Device Manager.

I shut down and changed jumper to Secondary Master.

During the reboot the drive appeared. Yay I thought! But once into Windows same invisibility. *groan*

The drive has Win98 SE installed... could this be the problem? If not, what else?

Thanks.
