357205 2005-05-21 07:42:00 Hey,
What do you all think of http://www.techtorium.co.nz. Has anyone from here studies there "Diploma in PC Engineering".

I find it a bit scary it seems that there is only one sole tutor and the price tag is $9000 which seems a lot to take a student loan on.

Is it worth joining Techtorium? Or is this just an under I.T training company which will go out of bussiness soon?

HAVE A NICE DAY

357206 2005-05-21 08:38:00 You'd need to find past students to get a fair report.
I've always been dubious. 44 weeks makes you an expert? And they all get jobs?
And the price...

357208 2005-05-21 14:25:00 Crikey. You could learn those skills yourself with Google, a few old PCs (and some networking gear) and a copy of Office. I know I did (strangely enough Computer Science doesn't teach that stuff).

Have to be a bit worried about relying on a single tutor - they may be either great or completely average (and of course the tutor may change from year to year or even during the course).

Personally I'd save the $$ myself and just do the Cert exams. As with any course what you get out of it depends on the effort put in. There seems to be no programming at all on this course which is a bit poor for how long it is.

357209 2005-05-22 02:56:00 There isn't any programming course or anything like that . I e-mailed them about there course and they claim its NZQA approved but the price is damn high .

I wonder whether its a good choice to join private I . T institutes like these . Right now I am looking at "Computer Powers" Diploma in Systems Technology ( . computerpower . ac . nz/courses/diplomas/systemstech . htm" target="_blank">www . computerpower . ac . nz) .

To me it looks impressive because it has a mixture of I . T and electronics but still the length of the course seems strange for the level of study . Only about 10 months and you can fast track it to about 8 or 9 .

But they seem to offer field training which not a lot of universities do, infact none, but I do know that some polytechnic offer field training . Thing which impresses me but at the same times raises my doubts is the 10 months of study and you recieve a job within 3 months . Seems strange!!

I will be out of school this year and just to tired to go through another 4 year of ui, so decided to look at these 1 year "Diploma Courses" . Probably looking at some cross credits too .

Anyway Computer Power is something I am looking at, if I find a flaw I would rather go to Auckland University :groan: .

357210 2005-05-22 03:05:00 Then don't do one at all. Get some study materials yourself and start with A+, you can then sit the exam, all without going to some course to do it.
If you don't have any old PCs get one and play around with it. Best way to learn troubleshooting anyway.
I've got an ancient 486 you can have. It has one fault but other than that boots up ok. Has all its bits intact. You could start by diagnosing it...

357211 2005-08-22 07:33:00 To make a point no-one here mentions that they contacted Techtorium, nor did anyone go and see what the course is about .

Surely it makes sense to go and see the course provider .

Techtorium has completed the first year of training and has put the first group of students into IT jobs .

There are currently more than 10 students in IT jobs as PC Engineers who have completed this course . These are the foundation students who completed the first course .

I think that speaks for itself .

I think that speaks for itself . I don't think so . And it seems to me that this is exactly the kind of organisation that the government is currently cracking down on which exploit public funding and their students .

357214 2005-08-23 04:57:00 I myself am a former student of techtorium and I say it was the best choice I made going there. I now have a decent well paying IT job all in 1 year, other Institutes and universities charge around $7000 per year for 3 years so this course is well worth the NZQA accredited level 5 Diploma. To all you critics out there who have nothing to show for you work I say you can keep taking my trash every Tuesday. Jack-Ds (8174)
