357075 2005-05-21 01:17:00 Hi guys

I've finally decided to do the "broadband" thing but I'm not sure what is available (and good) in my city. I live about 200 yards from a Telecom exchange, and I'm currently with Clear Flatrate dial-up.

Any suggestions from fellow NPians? Or will it be a decision between Orcon, Xtra and perhaps Clear?

357076 2005-05-21 01:48:00 Well, as I advise all my friends the same way who are planning to get broadband for the first time....

#1 Choice: Go with Ihug (Bliink)... Free modem, free connection, and cheaper comparable plans to telecom xtra... They use the same last mile connection anyway to your home, so service quality is about the same....

#2: Heavy downloader choice: Orcon if you want flat rate 256k..... Or, slingshot if you want a discount off a modem, although apparently, their services leaves a lot to be desired....

#3: Alternate choice: Iconz if you don't like Ihug

#4: Cheap-ass internet: Woosh (if you can get it), $20 for the 1st six mths, $30 after that... But just for 200mb tho

357077 2005-05-21 03:10:00 so it really does not matter where you stay - one can get all the plans everywhere?

357078 2005-05-21 03:19:00 As long as Jetstream service is available, you should be able to have any of them.

Living 200 yards from the exchange is good, but only if the exchange is jetstream capable.

There is a page on Telecom's site that you can put a phone number in and it gives you the answer on that.

357079 2005-05-21 04:31:00 I think at the telecom website somewhere. There's a broadband speed detector or something.I remember reading it in netguide I think. You Type your phone number into the website and it will tell you approximately how much speed you will get.I tried it before. It appears my friend in westown is faster than my place at merrilands.Lol. 357080 2005-05-21 12:44:00 That's this one...

www.jetstreamgames.co.nz

And to check if your place is ADSL capable, just go into the telecom website and click on the links towards signing up for jetstream...

But nah, don't go for telecom cause they cost more..

357081 2005-05-21 16:03:00 Nope not that site. You literally type your mobile in and it gives you an estimate of the type of speed you will get if you register broadband Ninjabear (2948)
