Emphasizing the urgent need to accelerate research on neglected diseases, Gates also announced that the Gates Foundation will more than double funding for the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, an effort launched in 2003 to develop solutions to 14 major scientific challenges that, if solved, could lead to breakthrough advances in global health. The foundation will provide an additional $250 million for the initiative, bringing its total commitment to $450 million.

Adding to a previous pledge of $200 million for third-world disease and health research, Bill Gates dropped another $250 million into the pot because of overwhelming response.

In the spirit of bridging the gap between developed and developing nations, Gates, 49, announced the pledge and the World Health Assembly in Geneva today.

He began a $200 million project in 2003 to entice the world's top scientific minds to address the world's deadliest diseases and other problems, such as hunger.

After being "taken with the response" of a multitude of creative ideas like non-refrigerated vaccines, easy-to-use life-threatening fever detectors, drugs that attack diseases hiding in the immune system, and developing a single staple crop.

Gates was surprised at the disparity between richer and poorer nations when it came to medical research.

Because many diseases are unknown in wealthier nations, big pharmaceutical companies ignore them.

Is this the same Mr . Bill who now wants to charge us for security for our Windows opsys? In a recent article on another post site (Good Morning Silicon Valley) our good ol' friend Bill is now going after McAfee and Norton . His motive? Well, to hear Mr . Whiney-Philanthropists say it he is going to do it right . But at a cost to us, the users .

Now, let me get this straight . . . hmmm . . .

Micro$oft sells Windows .
Micro$oft has some holes in it as far as security goes .
Very large companies have made a living on those holes .
Mr . Bill sees money not flowing his way

ergo: M$ will now kill any competition by selling security for IT'S OWN WEAKNESSES!!!!!!!!

. . . and to paraphrase from the same article, it's like selling a car to a customer and renting them the seatbelts and airbags .

No wonder third-world hackers hate him so . :badpc:

Yep, same guy. He wears (at least) two hats - seen as a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde by so many!

Charging us for security of Windows? Egad!!! :angry

355781 2005-05-17 03:39:00 As one of the world's most generous philanthropists, he is a genuinely a nice guy. The causes he gives to don't seem to have anything to do with MS at all, so there is no financial benefit at all to him.

As for his products, he can do anything he likes with them really (within the law of course), because computer users are not obliged to use them (no matter how much you think you are stuck with Windows). If you feel so strongly about Windows flaws and disadvantages, why not use something else?

355782 2005-05-17 03:42:00 There is an enormous financial benefit to being "generous" on that scale. It helps Microsoft pay a very low percentage of its gross income in tax. Graham L (2)
