356354 2005-05-23 01:30:00 What a lot of people don't realise is that using CSS site-wide can actually retard a website's performance in Google's search ranking results. Believe it or not! Greg (193)
356355 2005-05-23 02:20:00 How can that be Greg?
The code is far cleaner using CSS, and therefore easier for the bots to index. The CSS only contains code not desired by the bot.

Also by having the css on a seperate sheet you reduce the size of the page, and I read, somewhere, (http://seochat.com ?) some bots only index the first 50 lines, less code in the header means more text where the bot can index it.

How? I don't believe it.

I always thought that Google looked in the meta keywords, the actual contents and links to and from the site. Google should not really be concerned with layout... It doesn't make sense.

356357 2005-05-23 02:31:00 This site report the exact opposite (although I can't comment as to their credability)
www.webcredible.co.uk

The website of Juicy Studio saw a six-fold increase in site visitors after switching from a table-based layout to a CSS layout. Search engines prefer CSS-based sites and are likely to score them higher in the search rankings because:

The code is cleaner and therefore more accessible to search engines
Important content can be placed at the top of the HTML document
There is a greater density of content compared to coding
Using CSS for layout is also highly advantageous for usability, as it leads to significantly faster download times.

I very much doubt that. It would probably improve your result in a search seeing as google does not have to sift through all your formatting and tables.
