| 654393 | 2008-04-07 08:59:00 | Why the hell are there any users left on xtra? Just been on the phone for half an hour to a friend whose outgoing email stopped a couple of weeks ago. He had tried to get it sorted by ringing the helpdesk but still no go. Got put onto a level two support person who couldn't fix it either (blamed Mozilla!). After many trial and errors I got it going by using smtp.xtra.co.nz. So why did send.xtra.co.nz suddenly stop working? I know, this is a rhetorical question. GIVE XTRA UP. |

I have an xtra Email address also two Domains (not with xtra) Settings are: All outgoing mail "smtp.xtra.co.nz" Incoming Xtra mail: "pop3.xtra.co.nz" (pop3, gromit, mail, are variations) Incoming Domain on Utopia: "gromit.utopia.co.nz" Incoming Domain on Orcon: "mail.orcon.net.nz" Your settings do not include your Domain name, that is in the address. User username & Password must be given for each Domain address. The outgoing is "smtp.xtra.co.nz" to avoid relay problems. I have no ticks for anything else except remove mail from server. So long as you do not use Webmail, there is no reason to bother with Yahoo. |

I followed the steps to the letter with regards to their security upgrade and the need to authenticate non xtra domain addresses etc. but still no luck. i have received phone calls from them, letters in the post and now emails telling me they are blocking my emails because i have not done what they have asked. HOWEVER today i thought i would give it one last shot, so checked my email address that was under the yahoo xtra account list. I saw it was all in lower case. so checked my email address in outlook 2003, and saw the first letter was capitalised, changed it to lower case, and low and behold, the test account settings worked. So with send.xtra.co.nz as my smtp server, my outgoing server requires authentication, with my xtra logon details used, and port 465 with encryption turned on, all works fine. |

Alternatively, use a web host that provides their own SMTP servers to send out email. You host is expensive compared to other hosts and you only get 20MB of diskspace for $22.50 per month, and they charge you extra if you want spam protection on an email account, which many other hosts give you for free. |
