357144 2005-05-22 11:38:00 I would say things were pretty lawless 100 off years ago, Rape and pillage being something of a worldwide pasttime, then we have 2 world wide wars, and 20 years of stunned silence, now the population is starting to slip back to its natural shape....

Well said. But generally if you look at the history of man, as cities developed, crime control and law developed alongside. Crude at times - transportation in the 18th century to Oz for theft. Pretty tough.

Nevertheless we have evolved rules to allow us to all get along. These were in conjunction with a god-fearing populace. I know this isn't a trendy or popular view, but what is missing today is an understanding of ethics, morality, and spirituality. Without these, people often don't care about anyone but themselves. Not everyone, but 10% is enough for the other 90% to feel threatened 24hrs a day.

In the USA, there now exist many gated suburbs. Fences around them, security guards, only one entrance. I would be deeply saddened if that ever became necessary in NZ.

I'd say it's already here in parts of Auckland. In a word it's tragic. Gated communities, whilst touted as necessary for security, are the thin end of the wedge of a class-based society. And that's one system we definitely don't want!

I don't disagree with your overall message but isn't it possible to have ethics and morals without spirituality?

357146 2005-05-22 12:38:00 We have 18 gated communities here now.

They have 6,215 residents.

Mainly they live there for reasons that they were personally involved in the "clearances" of crime.

357147 2005-05-22 21:49:00 NZ is, unfortunately, matching the pace overseas. Many places in Sydney have security measures to keep baddies out. For instance, Coogee, Bondi, Kings Cross all have homes and flats with steel bars on the windows and doors, plus locked gates. In Asia it is routine - Singapore, Malaysia, HK, Thailand, I've seen barred windows and doors everywhere in these places. Strommer (42)

Not sure whether Godfather is referring to all of New Zealand or not but there are already at least a couple here in Christchurch that I know of. Large ones, I mean. There are also heaps of smaller groups of housing that you cannot gain entry to without a resident letting you in.

357150 2005-05-23 04:02:00 It looks like you got to protect yourself/loved ones/property,cause the cops are not doing it. :annoyed:

Is your home a castle or a prison now?

Put up big walls, locks on every door/window,chuck in a alarm system.

Thats a home/prison now,just got to add a drawbridge,moot and its a castle.

And dont forget the barbwire/glass on the top of the walls.

And the big dog patrolling the grounds.

And then for the person they either learn a martial art/boxing,or carry a conceled weapon like I know a couple of friends do.

I have serious locks, some boarded up windows, toughened glass, bars, boarded up/reinforced doors, and barb wire on my fence line. None if this stopped the local junkies from stealing the battery out of my friends twuck last thursday night. No, we didn't bother reporting the crime!

OK i live in an area so dodgy there's got a big rugby stadium opposite, and a methadone clinic about 150 metres from my house.

My biggest loss was losing just about everything left in the house to junkie squatters while i was away last year. Just one more reason to dispise those whose desire to get thier fix out weighs everything else. :(

357152 2005-05-23 09:18:00 Some ****wit assaulted me on the soccer field on Sunday. Completely unprovoked he struck a nasty blow to the back of my head while I had my back turned. He now faces a permanent ban and the prospect of being charged with assault.

It doesn't matter where you go in the world, there are idiots everywhere who seemingly go out of their way to spoil things for people.

357153 2005-05-23 12:03:00 I ask if that much has actually changed?

20ish years ago i lived in a flat on the end of King Street, which was the Ponsonby side of an AK motorway. I was at home, sick and therefore home at an unusual time. I remember waking up to the sound of my bedroom window being smashed. I hit the shape that arrived in the curtains several times with a baseball bat till it went away. There was a series of repucutions, and ultimatly we all moved out.

So far in CHCH 20 years later, the only unwelcome visitors i have had whilst home were people i knew. However such visitors are proof of me not allways choosing my associates well, rather than a "rise in crime".

My point? All this crime ****e is nothing new.
