356126 2005-05-18 01:05:00 uh . . no! Not right!

Lessee . . . . . does anyone here remember 95, 98, 98SE, ME (barf)?

Just try if you will getting an update or security support for them . The deathknell of any system or product depends upon support for the item at hand . If this were not the truth, then we could all go down to our 1959 Chevrolet dealer and buy a new ElCamino . (Did they sell them in NZ?) I haven't seem a Rambler dealer for years either . (Again, I'm not sure NZ's know a Rambler . . but that's to their merit . . . they were crappy cars)

My point is this: There is such a thing as forced obsolescence .

When the wags (dog talk here) get around to deciding they want everyone to upgrade, they just pull the carpet out from under the product and the people they shouldn't hurt at all----the end users .

Now, I know that there is a certain "pioneer spirit" in NZ as there was once a long time ago here in the US, and that spirit gets rekindled from time to time by this sorta mentality shown by M$ . Ol' Daniel Boone had it easy with indians, bears, bad weather and poor rations: we on the other hand, have it bad with yearly obsolesence . I digress, but it's my turn on the soapbox anyway .

So, (not getting the point across here I bet), I get a case of the jaws (an American euphamism for anger) when in the very near future, all we will be able to receive on our tv's is HDTV, and on our computers whatever opsys Uncle Bill supports for the moment .

BTW: I drive a 1986 Chevrolet and a 1989 Isuzu and my wife drives a 2003 Astro . We are not keeping up with the Jonses, nor the Gates either .

We practice iconoclasty .

356127 2005-05-18 01:45:00 Going by the above I'll be switching my entire company over to Linux....

You should start doing so piecemeal now Metla. I hear the new Novell-SuSE is a pretty good business distro.

356128 2005-05-18 01:53:00 My point is this: There is such a thing as forced obsolescence .

But not as much as you would think . There is a choice, and there has been one for over ten years now, and it's been (in my mind) an acceptable one for over four years at least for the average user . A Linux distro like Novell-SuSE, Mandriva, Fedora, Xandros or Libranet will comfortably run on a Pentium II, and have more features . better security and stability and be a lot cheaper than any XP variety . I am going out on a limb now and say this will also apply to Longhorn .

Someone else will lecture you on Macs . . . ;)

356129 2005-05-18 02:17:00 To tell the truth I had a chuckle at them jumping into my thread to spread the word of Apple, they must have been waiting for the chance...

Anyhow, Plenty of fodder for MS abuse in the original post without taking the easy route and just having an Apple love session.Alot of whats being reported troubles me.

Its worth noting however that no source has been posted for the info.....

Yes I did notice that, but after all this is the chat forum, so let's not let the little details get in the way eh! ;)

Talking of planned obsolescence, along the lines that Vinnie is talking about, I wonder if the value of older hardware will in fact rise. Could we see a new industry in reviving older PC's (modding) not to run basic software (as per refurbishing for community/charitable use) but to get the most out of them for modern software (non-MS or "obsolete" MS OS). Much like having your old classic yank tank rebuilt with improved handling comfort and power (there's only so much you can do with an old side valve though).

356131 2005-05-18 05:16:00 you know bill gates said in an interview with Playboy that he took LSD . . . so maybe there is some truth in youur title . . .

PLAYBOY: Ever take LSD?

GATES: My errant youth ended a long time ago .

PLAYBOY: What does that mean?

GATES: That means there were things I did under the age of 25 that I ended up not doing subsequently .

PLAYBOY: One LSD story involved you staring at a table and thinking the corner was going to plunge into your eye .

GATES: [Smiles]

PLAYBOY: Ah, a glimmer of recognition .

GATES: That was on the other side of that boundary . The young mind can deal with certain kinds of gooping around that I don't think at this age I could . I don't think you're as capable of handling lack of sleep or whatever challenges you throw at your body as you get older . However, I never missed a day of work .

PLAYBOY: Here's the wildest rumor: You once trolled Seattle in a limo looking for hookers .

GATES: No, no, that is not true . A Korean friend of mine in high school rented a limousine one night, and we went to Burger Master . He liked one of the girls there, so he thought it would be fun to pull up in a limousine and leave a big tip at this drive-in place . But that is quite a metamorphosis from this nice hamburger girl to something more lurid . This isn't the rock-and-roll industry . The computer industry doesn't have groupies like rock does .

just something to think about :)

356134 2005-05-18 05:49:00 By the time Longhorn is released a 4Ghz cpu will be the norm, 3Ghz is about the average at the mo for a good computer,The price will be similar.

What I want to know is what the hell the OS will be doing to need any of those specs, The OS is going to need twice the resources of Doom3?
