355784 2005-05-17 03:51:00 LOL Metla like keeping those pink fluffly slippers so clean and pristine in this yukky cold weather we are having...:p

To tell you the truth, I have been amusing myself by trawling through the systems on trademe loaded with 2 grands worth of software and an asking price of a few hundred and asking if the software installed is legit, and wether the serials and media are supplied. So far the questions are going unaswered...

Muhahahahaha.

Hey, nice one, Metla!! And in spite of Beetle's flatteringly positive description of you, the photo (link above) really is what I think you look like!

Vinref - that is why I try not to trash MS or Bill - as you point out, no one forces me to use Windows. But thank God the days of W95, and even W98, are gone and over with!! WinXP is fine with me these days.

Taxes or not, the many many people who benefit, and who will benefit from the Gates Foundation, will certainly not hate Bill.

I'm assuming this is part of Bill's inheritance or perhaps money he earned delivering the local rag as a boy and Melinda has been recycling beer cans?

No matter, the money is unimportant to the Gate's, they no doubt derive great satifaction from the giving, the benificiaries also derive a benefit and, while I believe Bill is more interested in power than money these days I can't see him allowing this largesse being squandered in inefficiencies.

Whatever you may think of him and his optional, voluntary, no-obligation-to-use products, it's never a good reason to begrudge such enourmous, no-strings-attached, no-obligation generosity.

Think of all the other multi-zillionaires out there that are so altruistic...Larry Ellison, Steve Balmer, Paul Allen - nope. Steven Spielberg - nope. The Walton Family - nope. Queen of England - nope. Various Saudi royalty - nope (only to al Qaeda). The Catholic Church - nope. The New Zealand Government - nope...

355788 2005-05-17 05:13:00 When he takes off his 'Monopoly-MS' hat, and puts on his Philanthropy hat, he is not such a bad guy... (snip)

Hmm, Steve L is either trawling again, or he really is a Fully Paid Up Member of the Billy Gates Fan Club

See the other thread: pressf1.co.nz

Optional, voluntary, no-obligation-to-use products, gee wiz , almost sounds like a discription of philanthropy except I'd add duress in there somewhere although I'm working to break that in my situation.

BTW, I'm all for Bill giving his dosh away as evidenced in the para you quated, but he is not by any means the the first or the most generous measured against affordability. As for that list of stinges, I trust you've done your homework, you know, charities set up, amount of dosh given, amount compared to GDP, history of giving, voluntary time/resources given and the rationale for giving.

John, what's that trip trapping over the bridge

Good one, John . :D

But as I stated, he does wear two hats, and is perceived a Dr Jekyll - Mr Hyde character, rightly so imho .

Trawling? Well, I suppose in a way . I believe it is worthy not to see the world in black and white terms . Most all people, all of us, are not 100% good, or 100% bad . So I guess you are correct, yes, I am a member of his fan club - but only the philanthropy fan club, not the Mr . Monopoly fan club!

I find it interesting how much hate Bill Gates stirs up, and even more interesting when a tech expert like our venerable PF1 Metla gives Billy and MS credit for achievements like Win XP (not overlooking its faults) .

John, I can assure you, that when I am convinced that all of my programs can work on another OS e . g . Linux, and when I can find alternatives to the likes of MS Office (I tried OOO but find MSO better), I will quite happily ditch MS! Bill's arrogance during the court monopoly battles still irks me .

Thanks for the best laugh  this morning!
I don't find it difficult to digest the bit about the Saudi royalty, but all the others - are these just your opinions or can you substantiate them? For example, hasn't the NZ govt contributed heaps in foreign aid? I don't know, but would find it surprising that all that you name do not contribute to charity .
