654775 2008-04-01 01:16:00 I have just been doing the "spring cleaning" on my families computers . We have one desktop machine and two laptops, running on a network thru a Linksys WAG54G modem/router .
I backed up one HP laptop, and then deleted the partitions and reinstalled XP sp2 and the drivers from the recovery discs . I used the networking setup wizard to configure the network .

The problem comes when I did the same procedure on the second HP laptop .
I could not connect to the LAN or the internet, and the Status page for the connection said that the address type was "automatic" and it had no info for the default gateway .

Both the desktop and working laptop have the address type as "assigned by DCHP" and the gateway is what I had previously set the router too . I have tried using the network wizard disc to change the settings, but with no luck .

I can't find any other way to change these settings .

Does anyone have any ideas or procedures to sort this out?

Cheers

654776 2008-04-01 01:27:00 Dont use the network setup wizard it sucks

Go to start/my network places / view network connections, and configure the one that isnt working here. Right mouse on the connection/properties/TCP/IP

654777 2008-04-01 06:17:00 Hi Speedy,
I tried manually configuring the IP address etc using the info from the support tab on on of the working machines, but had nothing for the DNS address.
This would let me see the network, but would not let me access the internet.
I reset it back to auto for the IP address and DNS, same result, the address type would be "automatic" with no gateway, and no access to the network or internet.
I have swapped out the cables and ports on the router, the working laptop and desktop work fine with any combination of cables or ports. I have reformated and installed XP again, still with the same result.
When I plug the network cable in, the LAN icon in the tray has a little yellow dot moving over it, and the message "acquiring network address" it then tells me that the Address type is automatic, and that I have "little or no connectivity"

I need to make the address type "assigned by DHCP" but can't find a way to force this.
Any more ideas?

654778 2008-04-01 06:42:00 With the Limited or No connectivity you need to make sure the router is not actually issuing an address to the PC.

Click start/run type in CMD press enter, in the box type in ipconfig press enter if you get a reply with the address of 169.254.x.x then its not connecting - if its a different address please advice.

You can also try rebooting the router - wont hurt and you never know.

Also download and run Winsockfix (www.spychecker.com)

Just making sure here - after reinstalling XP, you did install all the drivers for your hardware ??

654779 2008-04-01 06:42:00 Sounds like its struggling to obtain an address from the DHCP Server (router).
You cause try manual ip address and use the router for the gateway address and the dns server would be that shown on the router or the other LAN clients....

Its only a stop gap.....

I have come across network cards that fail to obtain dhcp address before, usually a sign of defective equipment. If the laptop has wireless why arent use using that?.
