2008-04-03 20:27:00 | Good morning This is an extract from a post I made recently about problems with inconsistent internet connection courtesy Telstra: "...For many months now our broadband connection has been falling over at different times day and night. It started happening maybe once every couple of days then, at its worst, it was happening several times a day. We run a home network through a router. We've been ontoTelstra on a number of occasions with very little in the way of useful help. We've even been visited by a Telstra technician a couple of times and have been told everything is set up perfectly and they "can't really see what the problem is". There was a suggestion that it could be the router, but that is Telstra's opinion. However, we finally bit the bullet a few weeks back and bought a new super-duper router at a cost of nearly $200. This hasn't resolved things. The connection still falls over at least once a day..." Earlier this morning I was working on my laptop (VPN connection to my work). Everything was okay. My PC shares the same desk as my laptop and was also on/connected to the 'net. I took my daughter to school. When I got back the connection on the laptop had fallen over but the PC was fine. I got reconnected only after a few minutes by resetting the modem/router. Can anyone explain how it is possible for a PC to be able to access the internet through a home network while a laptop on the same network does not. Thanks.

2008-04-03 20:51:00 | The laptop might not be configured properly. Or its got something the PC hasnt got. ie: A firewall thats blocking something | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |

2008-04-03 21:18:00 | Laptop is wired, although it shares a wireless mouse/keyboard with my PC. Not sure about Speedy's comment. If the laptop had a firewall or something else blocking access, surely that would mean that I wouldn't ever be able to connect to my work? The point I'm making is that this (PC connecting/laptop not) is the first time it has happened. I've been working from home a few days a week for more than a year now. Until now, when the internet connection falls over I cannot get access through my PCs or my laptop. | k8smum (6062) | |
2008-04-03 22:07:00 | When the PC and laptop cant get onto the internet, are they still able to talk to the router ? or see each other on the network ? What has to be determined is it the internet connection playing up or is it the connection between the PC/Laptop and router . When its going - see if you can log into your router - If you dont know how, click start/run type in CMD press enter, in the black box type in ipconfig look for the gateway - that will be the routers address . Lets say for an example its 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 - open the browser, in the address bar type in http://192 . 168 . 1 . 1 press enter, you should then see the login window . See if this works still when you lose the connection .

2008-04-04 07:07:00 | Does the laptop drop its connection more than the pc (does the pc ever drop its connection). What type is the new router? | dolby digital (5073) | |
2008-04-04 09:33:00 | Hi I repeat, this is the first time this has happened. On every other occasion when my internet connection has dropped off, I have been unable to access the internet through any of my PCs (I have three plus a laptop). Router is Netgear model FVS 114 Prosafe VPN firewall. The router/modem are always on, the PCs/laptop are not. Sometimes I can be working for a couple of hours or more then all of a sudden the connection dies, or I come home from work, turn a PC on and have no internet connection until I reset the modem and/or router. Trouble is, although this often works, sometimes it doesn't and it's usually a case of try again next day. Telstra don't have a clue. Bloody frustrating and annoying. Cheers

2008-04-04 10:00:00 | Since its telstra Cable - Have a look at This Thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) #5 -- Do that test and see what your settings are - if they differ to much from what I wrote / shown, that could be the cause of your problems - the modem, not the router. From memory when ours dropped sometimes it was only one PC other times it was the lot - completely intermittent. | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-04-11 01:58:00 | Hi Latest suggestion from Telstra re my problem is this (translated from a voicemail message which was pretty hard to hear in places): "...suggest probably because of a lot of traffic travelling on our network which ends up getting (almost?) received by your router because of IP the range that your router is on. Basically should be easily resolved by changing IP range that router uses to distribute IP addresses to your different computers that are connected to it. Once you know brand of router call company that makes it and they will happily walk you through how to change it " Do any of you fine people out there consider this is a feasible suggestion/solution before I attempt to follow up on it? Cheers

2008-04-11 02:05:00 | Sounds more like a fob off to me - Think about it - you have changed the router, so now two different routers are giving the same problem-:groan: While not impossible, its unlikely. So that leaves the router - Did you try what I posted in the previous posts - Number 8, there's a link in it and it sounds exactly like the problem I was having.
