| 655660 | 2008-04-03 01:45:00 | I'm fixing a PC that's got a dicky HDD, but I'm thinking the DVD writer might be a bit knackered too. Does anyone know of a utility that tests read times etc to determine whether the DVD drive is reading correctly?? I'm not worried about it's write abilities at this stage, although some issues would affect both functions I guess. How do you guys approach this kind of problem?? |

| 655661 | 2008-04-03 01:53:00 | I normally throw it into another PC, and try to read/wire a CD and DVD. I have a test DVD and CD, both with big data files and videos for testing. Also just listening to it when it's spinning up the disk, sometimes you can tell if it's having problems. |

Ditto - Same testing procedure - they are so damn cheap these days its often cheaper to put in a New one if the old ones playing up, than spend hours trying to fix a knackered one . |

Yeah it was the noise that made me wonder actually - as stormdragon suggested, I'd already tried a Ubuntu boot disk, but kept getting lots of errors, and eventually it gave up and dropped me into a command prompt . When I tried to boot up an XP cd, the drives spins up really fast, makes a fluttering, clicking sound, slows down, and then repeats (over and bloody over!) . It's an Athlon 1 . 6 . I'd say it took a good 10 minutes to even get to the EULA screen on the XP install . So, anecdotally, I'd say it was a rooted unit, but I wanted to be certain!!! ;) |
