Personally, I have no home phone line... I have a Worldnet Wired Country internet option, and then I use skype to call my local friends for ~$0.03/min... I only spend about $20 or so a month for phone calls then...

But as I was trying to help a friend install his internet, I discovered that for ADSL, you MUST subscribe to a telecom homeline plan... WHY???? Sure, of course you need a traditional phone line going into your home for ADSL, but why on earth must you join a telecom homeline plan, if you don't plan to use a telephone at all???

Really, this should be an issue the commerce commission must look into... VoIP is going to become more popular, and it makes no sense to have this absurd rule holding us back.....

What do you think???

A recent documentary, "VOIP - the free phone call revolution" aired on BBC covered this topic and the emerging VOIP revolution.

Interesting program - details here: news.bbc.co.uk

If anyone particularly wants to see this, let me know and I'll post a torrent link somewhere.

359189 2005-05-28 06:58:00 I've discovered that if you don't pay your phone bill then Telecom cut it off, but don't disconnect your ADSL (I'm not with Xtra).

This is how you get "naked" ADSL in New Zealand ;)

Your phone calls and internet come down the same line. If they cut the line, then that's it, isn't it?

359191 2005-05-28 07:36:00 I thought you chould sign up for "Telecom Jetline" or something along those lines - cheaper, but local costs are $0.20 each. somebody (208)

It was Telecom Homeline. Telecom scrapped it to make more money.

To kill your phone service they just deprogram your number, but the adsl is hardwired to your own cable pair at the exchange, hence the "always on" feature.

Interesting. But if I can get 'naked' ADSL like Gibler says, then I don't understand why I can't just ring Telecom and cancel my homeline but keep my ADSL.

Heh, because Telecom have their Terms and Conditions .... and we (the comsumers) need some Government officials to hold them to account.

Worth a try though ;)

359196 2005-05-28 09:02:00 Well I'd be tempted to ditch the homeline and just use VOIP - but I've heard reports that the VOIP quality is poor in NZ due to 'interleaving' or something like that. In other words, Telecom throwing a spanner in the works. manicminer (4219)
