358429 2005-05-25 22:47:00 Thanks for that, zqwerty.

Our nice 15 yr old neighbour came over yesterday to return the USB flash drive that I loaned to her, and she happily told us about getting a new iPod. My wife asked, "But where do you put in the tape or CD?"

Nowadays we hardly remember 5 inch drives, and floppies along with CRTs are outdated. It may not be too long that we look on mechanical HDs the same way.

358431 2005-05-26 01:51:00 16 GB isn't going to be that useful for laptops as the only drive. What are you going to put on that? OS and a few programs? It's sortof a backwards step in technology unless they can come up with much bigger capacities. vapo (5203)
358432 2005-05-26 02:09:00 lol you only need a couple of gig for the OS and a couple of programs. 16 gig is heaps for a lot of uses. crikly a lot pc's i see even with XP, office, games, mp3 and they still don't get over 10 gig.

what i can see a lot doing is useing fast solid state drives as main drive then having other slower bigger drives as bulk data storage. naturally it won't all fit in some laptops etc.

358433 2005-05-26 03:02:00 One of these in my flaptop would be ace! My network will shortly be doing bulk storage, and all my local stuff and portable on a solid state drive would be supurb!

Also if i could forget about cost and stuff, i'll have one for my next desktop please, a SS drive for "/" and a large capasity mechanical one for "/home"

Mind you, by the time i have the money, i'm sure capacity will have quadrupled!

Games these days are starting to come on DVD-9s. On my desktop I have 72GB just for programs and it's basically full.
