| 357517 | 2005-05-25 04:00:00 | I have just graduated with a Conjoint BCA and BSc degree and am currently working towards a BSc with Honours in Computer Science. I have heard from people in full-time employment that basic three-year degrees are 'just a pass-card to get into work', and that employers are more interested in experience / skills for the job. Despite how ubiquitous a Bachelor's degree may seem, I find degrees useful in what they teach, not just as a means to an end. Sure they (hopefully) build one's skills for a particular job at some level, but there is a lot of interesting stuff taught along the way that may not be used in one's career - I guess that's what makes degrees versatile to some extent. Therefore stating a degree by itself is not indicative of what someone can do (which is what they did at the graduation ceremonies - probably to) I guess this is why many employers in graduate recruitment programmes ask for a copy of the academic transcript with applications. As Prescott has said, it is good to mix the commerce with the technical as employers tend to look at the big picture for the organisation as a whole more than whether someone can implement a divide-and-conquer algorithm or design an electronic circuit that interacts with a microcontroller. That's why a BCA was helpful as well - it gives an understanding of how technical skills can translate into the business environment. I believe that I'm fortunate in also doing part-time work throughout my study - apart from reducing / eliminating debt, it also gives practical insight and experience for future employment. And despite how people generally perceive university study as theoretical and bearing little resemblance to the 'real-world', I have found that quite the opposite is true with IT. |

| 357518 | 2005-05-25 04:00:00 | I was gonna post this before , but decided against it..... so shortened version. I left school at 15, bummed around for a few years. went to polytech, got 2 lots of qualifications from there. (1 before and 1 after uni) Went to uni, young and single got a qualification there. came home, got married, and started my own business. and worked for another company part time, and on call, did that for 4 yrs. had a family. became a mum. - Home Executive :p Began retraining, with family and hubby working 80+ hrs a week. We never saw him, my grades were good. Decided we needed lifestyle change. Now running a motel, nearly completed my training and ready for a new direction again. dont know whether its more training or moving on from motel. Stress of living on the job, and training, and trying to have a happy family doesnt quite work somehow. as well as having a lot of other things going on, that social life, sports things 4x4 and such. I think it comes down to i want my family back, im missing out on that quality time.... big time, and i will never get that back. Its all a matter of jugling and priorities...and i think ive lost mine....due to stress and tiredness.... :dogeye: beetle |
