655644 2008-04-04 02:35:00 I have now reinstalled vista which has fixed the original issue and have had to download all the updates again. I was wondering what was the best way to force programs to install to a separate partition, i have been manually doing it for the first few programs but im sure there is a better way, registry tweks environment variables etc. hazza87 (12499)
655645 2008-04-04 02:45:00 I doubt u can force windowsupdate to download to a separate partition

You should have downloaded them manually (which is what I did for XP)

Then slipstream all of them, then burn them.

This will save me installing or downloading all of the updates, next time I format.

All, I'll have to do next time is reinstall and its up to date.

And when SP3 comes out I'll slipstream that as well

But in your case, you should download SP1 and slipstream that with Vlite.

Since it includes most of the updates till now

655646 2008-04-04 02:53:00 I was not asking about installing updates on a separate partition.
I was asking about installing normal programs on a separate partition so next time i have to reinstall i won't have to reinstall all my programs again.

655647 2008-04-04 03:02:00 Well you could but then once u format, it wont have anything in the registry about the programs you installed on the other partition.

And they wont run.

Altho there maybe some programs that will let u slipstream whatever program/s to a cd, that way once you install Vista / whatever the programs get installed at the same time

655648 2008-04-04 03:05:00 Just an update to the Above post I made Last night #8 -- The Slipstreaming finally finished some time during the night, on both PC's.

In the instructions/program it says it will take a while - 60-90 Minutes - god knows how powerful the PC has to be to achieve that.

Both PC's I was using have the same Spec's P4 3.0 CPU, with 1 Gb RAM. After 5 hours I left it, and went to bed, by the time I got up they had finished. Why they took so long I have no idea.

Made the ISO Images and new DVD's, just finished installing from them and it appears to have worked OK.

So back on topic - hazza87 - you can either do what I have just done, but be prepared for a long exercise - or use something like Acronis true Image (www.acronis.com) make a Image from the Acronis program to the other Partition on your PC once you have any updates / programs Installed, then make the bootable Acronis CD, and if needed at any time, run that and load the Image back to the C: drive to return the PC back to how it was when you made the Image.
To reload the image should take around 15 - 20 minutes depending on the speed of your PC and the amount of additional programs you have.

Regarding loading the programs on a separate Partition, some programs when you install give you the choice of default settings or advanced/custom, this will usually allow you to select a different location, Eg: your other partition, some do some dont.
