655252 2008-04-02 09:47:00 I have two 80Gb SATA hard drives set in a RAID array and now ned to ugrade to perhaps two 500Gb hard drives. The current drives available are now listed as 'SATA-2'.

What is the difference between SATA and SATA-2?

Can I safely upgrade to the SATA-2, will they be compatible with my Gigabite GA-8KNXP?

TIA, Peter.

655253 2008-04-02 09:56:00 They should be backward compatible. SATA2 will run at SATA1.

SATA1 is 150MB/sec. SATA2 is 300MB/sec. If not mistaken :D
In practice they probably won't be twice as fast :D

655255 2008-04-02 10:05:00 Just make sure you jumper them to SATA 150, or else they'll never work.

As some SATA 2's maybe set to SATA 2 by default
