655122 2008-04-02 00:00:00 I lost my internet connection a few days ago. It seems that it may have something to do with up dating my AVG virus software. I got a notice from them that I was due for renewal and shortly after that I had no internet connection. My IP help desk could not help me after tree attempts. I have paid for and downloaded the software up date. (I could get on line through AVG only) Still could not get on line. I removed the software from my system still cant get on line. I can get on line in the safe mode. Has any one had this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks
Red
I have Xp professional on an HP Pavilion lap top

655123 2008-04-02 01:06:00 Is your internet connection dialup or broadband?

Are you running a third-party firewall?

Have you tried System Restore back to before the problem occurred?

655125 2008-04-02 03:15:00 Thanks Foxymx and stu161204,

I did sys. restore and was able to the onto the internet. When I downloaded and reinstalled AVG my web browsers seemed to be on line but the pages were blank. this happened with Explorer and Firefox. I uninstalled the AVG again rebooted and was able to connect to the internet. I have sent AVG a request through their help page to assist with the problem. Will let you know what happens.

Thanks Again,
Red

655127 2008-04-02 06:56:00 Get Avast Home as your AV and Comodo 3 as your firewall for some great protection and free too!

Ditch AVG.

Ditch AVG .

I agree but Red Crane might be reluctant to do that since it appears that AVG has been paid for .

Just a general observation but quite a number of people seem to be having problems with AVG recently . I had a job yesterday where the entire computer was crippled until it was taken off . Maybe AVG is having problems with its latest updates?

We are running Free AVG 7.5 on 5 computers, & we have not had any problems at all with any of them (and I would have thought if it was updates causing the issue then more people would have the same problem.)

What version of AVG was installed on that computer that it was taken off?

That may possibly be due to the different types of software running on each machine. The ones with problems could be running something that AVG's updates may have had issues with.

Yes I have paid for AVG 8 and wish I had not. I run AVG free on my desk top and don't have any problems. I may ditch the program even though I have paid for it. To many problems.
The tech support responded to my request for help but their fix did not work. However it did point me in the right direction (sort of). Here is what I had to do:

I had to disable and enable the things they gave me until I came up with a combination that worked.

Web Shield: Enable web Shield but leave The Basic Web settings unchecked.

Link Scanner: Enable AVG Search-Shield only. Leave the other two options unchecked.

However now I have another problem. The AVG update fails because the connection to the update server fails.
So I have e-mailed them back about 6 hours ago with no response as of yet.
So I have an internet connection and the software but can't get the updates. I get an error that the AVG server connection failed.
I will see what they say but if they don't come up with a fix soon I will remove it from my lap top again and go with something else.
Thanks for all the advise.
