I have just obtained a nice shiny Samsung 22" LCD monitor to replace my decrepit 19" CRT.

The native resolution is 1680x1050 and it is running through a DVI port.

However the maximum resolution of of my XABRE 400 graphics card is 1280x1024 and if I try to run it at that resolution the task bar disappears off screen. I can run it fine at 1024x768 but I lose precious real estate and everything is bigger than I would like.

My current system is more than sufficient for my current needs so I don't want to upgrade just yet, however, I am willing to buy a cheap 8xAGP card ($100-150) if it will run the LCD at a higher (ideally native) resolution. I've seen a few at ascent within budget but I don't really know what cards are best bang for buck.

I have no particular allegiance to nvidia or ATI so any recommendations are welcome

cheers

XFX GeForce 7300 GT 256MB DDRII AGP $156.38 ExtremePC
Asustek N7600GS 256MB AGP 8X HDTV DVI DUAL $178.88 Ezone

Ascent doesn't have any brand AGP I'd buy.

You're probably better off looking on TRademe, more choice there.

656437 2008-04-06 11:10:00 Thanks

Those prices are getting up there a bit.

Doesn't have to be the greatest but a good all rounder with a descent amount of RAM is what I'm after ;)

cheers

AGP is to old to be cheap, economies of scale and supply work against it

How many? 100? More?

I worked for a place that used them, we went through loads...........the failure rate overall was a bit too high for my liking.

Besides ASUS and Gigabyte both have 3 yr warranties. There you go.

656441 2008-04-06 23:12:00 Are you sure you have exhausted all the possibilities with your existing XABRE 400 graphics card. A later driver for this card may indeed support 1680*1050.

I have an old TNT Riva 32MB card which runs a 1680*1050 monitor just fine for run of the mill applications. When I first plugged it in it didn't list the "widescreen" resolutions but after restarting the machine the "newer" resolutions appeared.

656442 2008-04-07 05:11:00 can you try using the vga output? On older cards, the vga output had a much higher max res, while DVI was limited to 1280x1024. utopian201 (6245)

First thing I did was look for a newer driver.I think I am using the latest one. Max resolution 1280x1024.

Changed to VGA input, can still only go to 1280x1024 but the auto adjust kicks in to adjust everything so that the task bar is visible.

Much better now, I can live with this until I decide to upgrade.

Cheers
