| 361161 | 2005-06-04 05:01:00 | This article (news.com.com) reports that Apple has decided to switch from the IBM/Motorola PowerPC chips to Intel CPU starting next year. Shouldn't be too much of a problem - the basis of MacOSX, FreeBSD, has always run on the i386 architecture. But it may mean that it will be possible/easier for users to upgrade. |

Doesn't mean it is going to be a x86 chip either. Pretty interesting though. You end up with these funny situations: Mac user: "that unix stuff looks really messy" ... then OS X came along Mac user: "powerpc is so much better than Intel" ... then Apple switch to Intel Lets hope for cheaper Apple hardware at least. |

The skeptic in me tells me you are right on all counts. Still, it's certainly not the only game in town. |

| 361165 | 2005-06-04 21:53:00 | hmmm, these stories have been going around for the last 18- 24 months, I would say very unlikely, I would prefer they went down the AMD route, and since apple is a hardware company any change in processors will still make them propritery, but i could be eating my words shortly | plod (107) | ||

| 361168 | 2005-06-06 22:36:00 | Just have to love the spin... "We can envision some awesome products we want to build for our customers in the next few years, and as we look out a year or two in the future, Intel's processor roadmap really aligns with where we want to go much more than any other." Which translates into IBM balked at the high cost of developing new chips for Apple due to them being a low volume seller.Doesn't justify the expense. So now a Mac is just a PC running a slick version of Linux, Presumibly they will continue to lack the performance of a PC and yet still manage to be twice the price. Pure comedy. |

| 361169 | 2005-06-06 23:28:00 | Who's to say that they'd use Intel x86 chips? They're much more likely just to have intel do the powerpc chips like what they use already. They're a chip manufacturer, they don't just have to make x86 chips. | Jeremy (1197) | ||
| 361170 | 2005-06-06 23:36:00 | Then they would run into the same issue, spend millions devoleping new tech for a tiny sales base, I would imagine though the chip will be built to order/spec. Now, I obviously have no idea what form the intel chips will take, and I couldn't care less about the entire cup of dribble, But I will milk it for as much comedy as possible. Apple could commision MS to build them an OS and it still would mean nothing round this parts (These parts being the area directly around me) |
