360700 2005-06-02 23:20:00 I'm writing a tribute song with a particularly important/relevant title, in anticipation of a famous musician's death (yeah morbid I know, but these things happen). The song won't be released until the artist passes away, but I'd like to be sure that no-one else can use the same title.

Is this possible that anyone knows? I know that there are many songs which are entirely different but have the same title, so is my idea futile?

Anyway, I'd rather have a poll so we can guess who you're talking about.

McCartney?

:)

(But the sensible answer is here (www.nortonmusic.com)

" Although you can copyright a song, you can neither copyright a song title nor can you copyright a chord progression. From the very beginning of modern western music, and continuing to the present day, composers and songwriters have written new compositions by using the chord structure or the chord progression of another song. In the 20th century, just about every field of popular music is full of songs with borrowed chord progressions (Rock, Jazz, Country, Latin, Dance, Reggae, etc.). Sometimes the borrowing of the progression is intentional, sometimes it is not, a composer's subconscious mind can store something it likes and then reinvent it later." )

So I guess it's really like trying to copyright a phrase or sentence.

360705 2005-06-03 04:57:00 However, you might be able to register a trademark. If "Windows" is a trademark, why not "Dead". But you might have a long wait to cash in. He's an immortal. Graham L (2)
