359558 2005-05-29 11:32:00 For those of you with laptops.
Do you have / use a Kensington lock?
(for those who dont know, they are laptop locks and are supposedly secure)

Did you know they can be picked easily with a pen and the cardboard tube of a toilet roll?

See Here (www.toool.nl)

Its about 7MB and 2 minutes long.

359564 2005-05-30 04:19:00 If someone is determined to enter a house or steal a bicycle or a laptop, locks are no use at all. The illusion of security depends on the belief that a thief or burglar is so responsible that they won't do any damage. ;)

Many locks are easy to pick. Most locks break easily. Chains can be cut. Windows break. Doors are very easily forced.

I always lock my bicyle, even if I'm leaving it for "just a minute". My argument is that if someone wants "a" bike, they'll pinch one which isn't locked. If they want my bike, they will have it, if noone intervenes. But dealing with a lock takes some time, and might attract attention.

If someone wants a laptop and there is a choice, the one without a lock is usually the one which will go. Even if dealing with the lock just involves putting the laptop on the floor while lifting the table leg to clear the cable.

359565 2005-05-30 06:06:00 I totally agree with what Graham says. A lock is merely a deterrant to casual (opportunist) theft. If someone wants something they'll have it no matter what. Nothing is secure, EVER. Jeremy (1197)

"It is important to remember any lock can be picked with a big enough hammer."

359567 2005-05-30 09:59:00 I hate scum who steal, break into people's homes etc.
It's not just the inconvenience of losing expensive and often irreplacable items, but it's the subsequent feelings of invasion of privacy, lack of security and loss of faith in the human race that really hurts.
Here's hoping all said scum rot in hell. :badpc:
