361182 2005-06-08 11:32:00 Dell, HP, Emachines, Acer are computer assemblers, they don't manufacture diddly squat.

Asus are a hardware manufacturer, They own the plants that build hardware, including 3 or so of the 7 biggest notebook factories.

For what its worth they (they being Asus) manufactuer the vast majority of ibooks and have aquired a number of manufacturing plants from ECS in the last few years(ECS spent up large on factories to produce laptops, I do believe they churn them out for many different brands, including their own range (excel, also rebranded for the NZ market as Hyundia by farmers). You won't see any desktops "manufactured by Asus" though you can buy them constructed of many Asus components.

You are not wrong. Metla is just trying to be difficult.
We all know what is being referred to as hardware in this instance.

Apple is both a hardware and software company. Apple sells hardware that uses an OS that Apple makes, and Apple makes software to help sell that hardware. It's not that it's a vicious circle. It's that the two are interrelated.

361184 2005-06-08 11:42:00 I assure you I am not trying to be difficult, There is a large difference between manufacturing hardware and assembling hardware (or even just getting hardware commishioned)

I most certainly am not a hardware manufacturer, I do just what Dell does, Just on a much much much much much smaller scale. The other difference is that when your comp breaks I won't spin ya off to a helpline in Malaysia.

361185 2005-06-08 11:51:00 so Griffins aren't biscuit manufacturies, but biscuit assemblers, right got it.
So for every company that uses somebody elses componets cant be called a manufacture, but and assembler. That puts my daytime job into doubt.

The difference is you don't design anything or request manufacture of components to your own specifications.

Boeing aircraft components are manufactured all over the USA and even in other parts of the world but they are made to Boeing designs and specifications. They all come together in the Boeing factory as a complete aircraft.
You don't say Boeing are not an aircraft manufacturer just because they did not make all the parts.

361187 2005-06-08 12:02:00 Anyhow.

Most people that swear the likes of Dell make excellent computers are usually very surprised to discover there are no actuall components made by Dell are in the box.

Especially the ones that tell me they "know for a fact" that other computer companies source Dell components to put in their box's.....

Your talking about aeroplanes and Plod is going on about biscuits?

Holy hell, attack of the stupids.

I think you see the connection but as usual when you can't respond with any
intelligent comment you resort to your own type of defensive "humour"
