656421 2008-04-06 12:04:00 If 1K was my budget I'd buy 2nd hand. That way you may also get some software included. Greg (193)
656422 2008-04-06 20:33:00 I suggest one of these (www.pbtech.co.nz) from PBTech not much over the 1k mark, powerful and runs XP Pro. stormdragon (6013)
656423 2008-04-06 20:41:00 They will ALL have Vista, however if it has Vista Business or Vista Ultimate then you can get an XP Pro CD with it.

If you've got a Vista Business Machine is it the same product key to activate XP?

It should be a separate Key, the Toshiba I have here, has the COA on the Laptop for Vista Business, the recovery Partition is on the Laptop as well, and there is a separate 2 x CD recovery CD's For XP Pro.

Thanks for clarifying that Wainui

Was just wondering as I brought an HP laptop about a month and a half ago, with Business installed didn't come with XP discs though. Doesn't matter though Vista's fine for most of what I'm doing anyway.

656426 2008-04-07 10:36:00 I think they are expensive and put a large drain on a laptop's battery. best to get a 7.2k RPM external USB drive.
.

I have not looked up any data to support my thought - but I doubt if an external 7200rpm full size drive would be much faster than an internal 5400rpm laptop disk which is much smaller (less seek time)

After doing a bit more homework the options sit like this:

Presario V3744AU (www.portables.co.nz)

Or build a dell Inspiron 1524
1.83 GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB
2gb ram

for ~$1200

Im so confused :waughh:

656428 2008-04-08 21:48:00 Are you in NZ??

I doubt you'll get one with Vista for under $1000

And I doubt you'll get one with dual core

If youre in NZ, you could have a look at the Dick Smith site

you can save $200-$250 by getting the Compaq v3645AU
it has only 1 gb ram but you can easily buy two new ram chips (is you want more ram) and install them by yourself (doing this, will distrupt the warantee) (around 60-70 each for a decent 1)
