| 656632 | 2008-04-07 01:41:00 | While fixing a friend's laptop (getting rid of trojans etc), I've noticed that the auto updates haven't been done for a while. Going to the update website allowed me to install all relevant ones, but the auto update settings seem to be wonky on their laptop. When I go to Control Panel -> Automatic Updates, all the settings are disabled (www.imagef1.net.nz)! Anyone seen anything like this before? And how do I fix it? |

See if that restores / resets everything The trojans may have disabled the Automatic updates service Go to control panel / admin tools / services. Look for automatic updates, make sure its on auto (select auto, then click on start), after you use trojan remover. |

| 656635 | 2008-04-09 05:06:00 | I keep the automatic update OFF. I have done no updates since SP2 and have a very stable trouble free system. I use Avast Anti virus, Zone Alarm Firewall & Comodo BoClean for the greebies. If it aint broke, don't fix it :o |

| 656636 | 2008-04-09 05:46:00 | bad idea, viruses can often slip past your system's antivirus and firewalls through holes that updates patch, you could be infected. Alot of viruses are waiting for the perfect moment to strike. | SPARTAN 860 (2618) | ||

I'm probably naive but I have not experienced any 'issues' nor come across any viruses at all over the past year and half. I basically installed XP, installed SP2, and that was it. Oh, maybe I downloaded some java VM things, dont remember exactly what now but didn't bother going through any MS updates stuff. Only thing I update on my system besides my NOD32 AV signatures on a regular basis is my video card driver and even that is not released 'regularly'. Aren't most of these updates to fix Internet Explorer/Windows Media player or something like that? I don't use those anyways, VLC/WinAmp/Firefox FTW. One day I might switch on my computer and find a million new viruses have sneaked in through some fatal windows security hole but I hope that day is very far away. |
