656262 2008-04-06 01:35:00 Hey Guys,
been searching around for a new LCD screen for my computer; at the same time it dawned on me that I could use my LCD screen to play my PS2 and PS3 (gearing up for GTA4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 when they launch).

My question is, which LCD screens do people recommend? Because I know some have an issue with 1080p and also most lack 1:1, so it would vertically stretch some of the wide screen format games (mostly PS3). Also, (according to Google) some screens display very poorly when connected via component video -> VGA adapter, while others seem to display beautifully. I'm looking at buying a Dell 24inch widescreen. Either the Dell 2407WFP-HC UltraSharp or Dell 2408WFP UltraSharp www1.ap.dell.com I'm leaning towards the latter model, as it has HDMI (so wouldn't need a HDMI to DVI adapter) to input signal from PS3.
Has anyone used their LCD screens like this? And/or does anybody suggest other model/brands that are just as affordable and have the same if not better functionality? 24inch is max i'd go, as its also going to be my computer display screen.

Cheers.

Well, that's not really a cause for concern, its more the features and functionality that I'm concerned about. Brand names and brand loyalty are nothing to me. One of the other reasons I'm considering using Dell is because they have a decent track record, as well as good repair and replacement programs, so I'm leaning towards them.

Thanks for your opinion though.

Cheers.

656265 2008-04-06 22:28:00 The Dell ultrasharps are generally very good from what i've heard. I have a Dell 20" widescreen and the display is excellent.

The refresh on the Ultrasharps is not as quick as some of the other cheaper screens, so if you are mainly gaming you may be better off with a cheaper
screen.

This forum (http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/) may be able to answer some of your questions re PS2 & PS3 gaming.

656266 2008-04-07 04:10:00 My vote goes for either of the 24" Dells you listed. They have both been rated highly. I have had my Dell 20" for 3 years and it has been excellent. LiquidSolidity (1589)

The dell 2407-HC and 2408 panels are made by samsung and are about a 3rd cheaper than the "equivalent" samsung (2407-HC ~= samsung 244t, 2408~=245t). Dell frequently have cash off offers and pricing errors from time to time (which they honour).

Just be aware that it takes Dell several revisions to iron out the bugs. The first revisions of the 2408wfp have various issues such as colour uniformity, brightness, input lag. The input lag may be an issue for some people, depending on how sensitive you are, but that is the cost of the 2408's excellent scaling ability so you can't have it all. Some people don't notice the input lag, others do. Do a google if you're curious...

The 2407-HC has inverse ghosting, which has been fixed in the 2408. I'd wait till the 2408 gets its issues fixed before getting one. I definitely am :) Otherwise, I'd say the 2408 is the best monitor in terms of price and quality. It is an S-PVA panel (excellent viewing angles, colour reproduction) at near TN panel prices (which have poor viewing angles, poor colour reproduction, but better response times).

As for response time, generally LCD screens don't ghost anymore, so I wouldn't worry about that (except for the 2407-HC, which most people dont notice anyway).

Yeah, both the 2407 and 2408 dells have issues, and the reviews I have seen of the dell 2408 haven't been that good. If they are playing games, a TN panel would be best for them, which both of these monitors aren't. TN monitors have better speeds, so there isn't noticable motion blur, which you can get with these VA panel. I may wait myself to get a 2408 monitor when they have fixed t he problems, although I am in no rush. the new 3008 also looks nice, but no in my budget.

This forum is the best, if you want to know all about LCDs the the best models to get.

656270 2008-05-08 03:15:00 Just a follow up to this post in case anyone is looking to do the same (purchase an LCD screen for use with comp and ps3 etc); I ended up purchasing a LG 246WH, for around $650 including GST (in auckland) . Not bad, considering its 24inch and HD ready, not bad at all .

Its pretty awesome, the HDMI works flawlessly with the playstation 3 . Has PIP, component inputs and yeah, I'm loving it .

I have a few gripes with it, namely PIP resetting screen size for the ps3 and component video being a bit choppy . But, regardless of this, it serves me well .

I recommend it for people on a tight budget, who want to use it for any professional work and also occasional gameplay (via hdmi; playstation 3) .

Grand Theft Auto 4 ran real smooth, so that was a bonus too! :P

Cheers!

I am pretty sure that is a TN screen, so it would not be good for colour accuracy and the viewing angles, compared to the more expensive VA type screens . But for the price, and gaming use, it should be fine .
