2008-04-05 00:09:00 | Ill start with my system specs: System specs AMD Opteron 154 San Diago 2.8GB CPU. Foxconn NF4K8AC-8EKRS Socket 939 Motherboard. 2048MB Geil Ultra-X nForce4 PC3200 DDR400 CL2 Dual Channel Memory. 450 Watt Power Supply. DVD Rom Combo. GeForce 7950 GT Graphics. Seagate Baracuda 160GB Sata2 Hard Drive partitioned 20/20/120 Dual booted with Vista Home Premium & XP Pro sp2 All setting are default. I use XP only for gaming & Vista only for office & internet. The system runs very well as such. I am currently running Flight Sim X & it runs very well at high settings. I realise FSX is designed for Vista & DX10 but I dont wont to up date the graphics at this stage. When I built the system I wasnt sure whether to use 2 x 1024 MHz ram or 4x 512. So I tried both with no noticeable difference. I am currently using the latter. Questions: 1/ Which combination would you experts recommend? 2/ The mobo claims it will support 4GB ram, would I see any advantage & indeed would the system support it? 3/ Have run CPUZ. Under Memory does the timings frequency of 165.5 Mhz sound right?

2008-04-05 00:46:00 | Seeing as the motherboard supports dual channel, it would probably be best to run 2x1gb in the dual channel slots. You will not see all 4gb unless you're using 64bit OS's ( 3.3gb at the most, under 32bit, no advantage in your present setup)), it's up to you. Dont know about the ram frequency question, perhaps someone else does?

You will not notice any difference between 2x1024MB or 4x512MB, I would go for 2x1024MB as it leaves room for upgrading. 2. 32bit OSes will see 3-3.5GB of RAM, if you run a lot of RAM intensive apps, then you may well. But me personally I run 2GB of RAM and the latest games on XP Pro with plenty of RAM spare at all times. 3. CPUZ is not always right, 2 different versions of it show my RAM as being at different speeds. Everest home (www.majorgeeks.com) always picks up my RAM at the correct speed, run that and see what the speed it. Also check in the BIOS the speed that it should be running at and make sure there are no CPU:RAM dividers. |

2008-04-05 03:50:00 | I use XP only for gaming & Vista only for office & internet. I am currently running Flight Sim X I'd do that the other way round. XP for everything except things that can use DX10. No point otherwise.

2008-04-06 22:12:00 | 1/ Will Vista not recognise 4GB ram either? 2/ If I changed to Vista for gaming & changed to a DX10 GPU would there be a noticable improvement to the graffics?

2008-04-06 22:23:00 | 1. Vista 32bit won't see it all, Vista 64bit will. 2. I'm not a gamer, so take this with a grain of salt: From what I have heard, general gaming performance is worse (consistantly lower framerate) under Vista than under XP, irrespective of DX10.
