657431 2008-04-09 22:59:00 Hi Guys,

Our old faithful Toshiba laptop which gave many years of faithful service was recently dropped and damaged beyond economical repair by my 14 month old son.... thankfully the good folk at AMI have agreed to a replacement, as we were in no financial position to replace it. The replacement has to come from Noel Leemings and they have sent us a $1,299.00 replacement voucher for a Toshiba A200/N00 as reveiwed in this months PC World Magazine.

This laptop looks ideally suited for our general use, however I was concerned that it only has 1GB of RAM and a 14.1 inch screen. This machine is our primary email and websurfing PC at home and also does a bit of image editing form our Canon 350D and plays movies on the TV etc. What are your opinions on this machine?

We can however opt to pay the difference and get a different laptop, but it has to come form Noel Leemings. We reckon we could afford and extra 100-200 dollars but not much more. There are a couple of Compaq and NEC laptops around for 1350-1400 that have the 15.1 widescreen and 2GB of RAM. Would it be worth buiying these laptops or just upgrading the RAM on the Toshiba?

My question is, are these brands of laptop OK? Our experience with Toshiba has been excellent, so I have a preference for the brand. Any advice you guys may have would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Andrew

657432 2008-04-09 23:02:00 Yes I would stay with a Toshiba if possible or Asus but not sure if NL have them.
If it has Vista on it then 2GB RAM would be better.

657433 2008-04-09 23:27:00 Thanks for the advice CYaBro. I had the same thoughts and the Toshiba reviews I can find on the net suggest that most are happy with them. The A200/N00 comes with 1GB DDR2 RAM, is it an easy upgrade to 2GB in a Toshiba laptop? Is the 14.1 screen to small and would a 15.1 be better for web veiwing?

Appreciate your advice :)

657434 2008-04-09 23:39:00 Hi

I reckon you should stay with Toshi too . I've had the Toshiba A/100 for about a year now, and has never missed a beat . Got mine from Noel Lemmings . Seeing you are paying up front Noel Lemmings might throw in something extra . I got a free Targus Laptop Backpak from them . See if you can cut a deal .

Be aware, I got caught on this too, the 1g RAM installed is actually two boards of 520mb . To upgrade to 2g you will need to buy separate boards . Installation is easy .

657435 2008-04-10 00:39:00 Screen size is fine - I use a 14.1" laptop as my primary machine, and it is more than enough for web browsing, word processing etc. I do have a higher resolution though, 1440x900.

In terms of RAM, it's dirt cheap nowadays - you can get 2GB sticks of DDR2 SODIMM for about $60.

657436 2008-04-10 04:56:00 Hi guys,

Thanks heaps for the advice, it make the choice a lot easier. I appreciate you taking the time to reply, and if anyone has any further opinions (for or against), please let me know. :)

It would appear that all that would be required to make the Toshiba A200/N00 laptop perform well (with Vista Home Premium) would be to up the RAM to 2GB? I assume based on the above and on the internet research I have conducted that all other specifications will allow the laptop to operate OK for its intended home user use....

One question on adding RAM, does it void any possible warranty?

:thanks

No. Some laptop manuals even tell you how to add/replace the RAM.
Usually just one or two screws on the bottom and remove the cover to expose the RAM slots.

657438 2008-04-10 11:42:00 Buy a larger external monitor and more RAM. Should cost you around $300 ($200 for a generic 19 inch monitor and about $100 for the RAM) beeswax34 (63)

657440 2008-04-11 03:26:00 Noel Lemming may even do the RAM upgrade for you on the device, although chances are you can get the memory cheaper from Pricespy

Definitely stick with the Toshiba thou ;)
