657382 2008-04-09 12:54:00 Yello, I thought I'd try the Ubuntu live disc from PCUser mag, when I boot the PC with the disc in the drive, the start-up screen goes through the process about Delray? inc, then stops at a dos screen pointing to 'A' drive. I can't get any progress after that,i.e can't escape and the backslash key comes up as "#". Is there any settings I was suppossed to change as the info was to just leave the disc in the drive and reboot, I've tried two discs, one with the files still in the RAR file and also with the files un-zipped?
cheers

657383 2008-04-09 19:29:00 You need to burn CD as a image type file. I am assuming they provided the file in a .iso format? If not, they should have provided instructions in the magazine on how to make the CD bootable.

Once you have a bootable CD, if the computer doesn't attempt to load it when first booting up, you need to check the boot order in the BIOS to make sure your CD drive is selected to boot before the hard drive.

657384 2008-04-09 19:44:00 Last months I think PC world mag had Ubuntu 7.10 on its DVD and instructions on how to turn it into an ISO disc, you need to do this first. gary67 (56)
657385 2008-04-10 08:29:00 Ever since I have had a ViewSonic LCD monitor I have to Press F6 on Ubuntu and type in noapic then it boots fine, otherwise it just hangs on a blank screen.

I don't work for Dick Smith's but they sell Ubuntu 7.04 for about $10 & this live CD version works fine. BTW once Ubuntu is installed you don't have to enter noapic each time...

Disabling APIC is a bad idea unless you really need to in order to boot.

BTW once Ubuntu is installed you don't have to enter noapic each time...Again, this is machine-specific. Some machines will need this option after install too. Most don't.
