657280 2008-04-09 06:56:00 Howdy

At the risk of inciting a religous war, I was hoping to get some pointers on what people suggest as the 'best' choice of a linux distribution for installing as a nice, simple, easy to maintain, second computer.

I want something that the kids can use to do homework etc, that's not going to take up all my time configuring, tweaking etc....

Ok, fire away.....

I second the motion  I've installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba laptop with nil ill effects :) Firefox and Open Office mean you can do 95% of what you want with a WinXP machine.

657283 2008-04-09 07:11:00 Ubuntu 7.10, just tried it last week and its awesome  ronyville (10611)
657284 2008-04-09 07:26:00 Ubuntu. Just make sure you keep it up to date, updates from a really old system to a really new system tend to break. Also be prepared for the occasional broken package in the repositories. It's definitely targeted at your needs though, and should serve you pretty well.

Also consider 'Kubuntu' - it's the same distro with a different desktop environment. Installing the 'kubuntu-desktop' package in Ubuntu will achieve the same thing and will give you a choice at login time.

657287 2008-04-09 09:53:00 PCLinuxOS. I tried Kubuntu being a KDE fan but didn't like it and Fedora would probably be more than you would want. mikebartnz (21)
657288 2008-04-09 10:59:00 I have been a RedHat/Fedora user since 1998 but changed to PCLinuxOS last year with very few regrets. johnd (85)
