An Apple a day ...

8-Jun-2005
Use an Apple computer and - according to our subscribers - you'll keep the computer doctor away. We take a look at the cult of the Macintosh.
At Consumer Online we regularly ask our subscribers their opinions on various products. Usually, the responses are mixed, but not this time. When we asked "Would you buy another Mac?", 155 out of 156 people who replied said they would. And they overwhelmingly noted their machines' reliability and freedom from viruses and other nasties.

362646 2005-06-10 09:55:00 Well it is kind of true with regards to the software i.e. lack or viruses or software. With OS X, the only real trick to fix most problems is to throw away some preference files that get corrupted. You can definitely, just install it and leave it out there for people to use and they shouldn't break it. The whole printing subsystem (i.e. CUPS) does get some issues from time to time.

My only real annoyance is that OS X can be very unreponsive at times and installing some upgrades seems to take forever (especially on G4s).

What I have come to hate rather a bit though is Apple Hardware. The iBooks with their dodgy logic boards are a real pain. Had many a hard drive die. The early G5 iMacs have yet another mainboard problem (had to have one given 3 new mainboards so far). Models such as the eMac are a pain to swap out parts to figure out what the issue is. In NZ getting some replacement parts can result in a wait for months...

Their warranty terms (i.e. the standard 1 year) are a joke. And even if you pay for Applecare it can be a real pain to get Apple to honour their warranty.

Roll on "Mactel" ... at least it may be a bit cheaper. Overall, yes a mac is probably better for your average Joe.
