362324 2005-06-09 04:58:00 Poppa John asked for free music sites, here are some for when popular music really was music and they played real instruments, and could sight read, not just mindless bashing away on a guitar

There is a vast selection of 1920s/30s music available these days on the Internet, from streaming live band(s)and streamed FM radio programs, streamed pre-recorded audio, download sites and sites where you can just listen but not directly download.
The sites listed below are not exhaustive by any means.

Lets start with live streaming.
The latest to come online is Vince Giordano and his NightHawks. This is the band that provided many tracks in the film 'The Aviator'
They broadcast live audio/video on EarthCam webcam each monday night and tuesday night from 8.30pm to 11.30pm EST from Charlie Os restaurant in Times Square, New York.
That corresponds to 12.30 to 3.30pm tuesday and wednesday NZST.

For real live authentic music from that era it is a must:

www.earthcam.com

From WMKV FM radio there is Dave Bartholomew's program called Friction, listen to that genuine 78rpm sound! There are also other big band programs and past era music.
The program schedule is here:

wmkvfm.org

For four hours of continuous 1920s/302 music broadcast each week, listen to Rich Conaty's "The Big Broadcast" on WFUV Fordham University FM radio: http://www.wfuv.org/

There is also an archive of past programs going back several years which can be downloaded.

Then there is Columbia University WKCR:
www.columbia.edu

OK, that's a selection of streaming live audio.

For streaming pre-recorded audio, live365.com has an enormous selection.

I listen to Radio Dismuke most of the time I'm on the internet, at the moment Bert Lown and his Biltmore Hotel Orchestra is playing "Sweet Summer Breeze", and I have about 10 other 'presets' stations that play 1920s/30s dance and jazz.
Dismuke currently has about 2000 sides that are played randomly but not repeated until the playlist has been worked through.
Thats about 100 hours of playing time. There is a link to Radio Dismuke from his website below.

One of the biggest jazz collections and reference sources on the net is "The Redhot Jazz" site. Music from here can be listened to but not downloaded directly.
www.redhotjazz.com

Another site for listening:
www.geocities.com

Now for some sites where 78rpm record sides can be downloaded:

Dismukes Virtual Talking Machine,
http://dismuke.org/

Pete Faints 'Jack Hylton Official Website',
www.petefaint.co.uk

Martins 78 Turntable, the main site is at present unavailable but he has a mirror site in Japan, this site is enormous, featuring many of the popular orchestras of the 20s and 30s, and it also incorporates "Granpas' Attic" a grand site whose owner is now deceased. It also has a collection of Dave Bartholomews 'Friction' programs archived, and collections of 78s submitted by entusiasts.

Glen Richards Hot Dance and Jazz,
www.2multiples.com

To learn all about Bix Beiderbecke visit Albert Haims' site.
bixbeiderbecke.com
On this site are many audio tapes, recorded programs, and over 115 hour long programs 'WBIX'.

362326 2005-06-10 09:22:00 Thanks Terry - some of it too early, even for me ! But found at least a site or two that I will follow up on.

Pity that some sites can only play with RealAudio. That program used to be really good.....but there are lots of people with reservations about it now as I understand it (too intrusive, I think I recall !). At the moment I have M/S Media Player and Nero Media Player (came with the PC I bought). Also QuickTime (which is bundled with Encyclopedia Brittanica - which I only bought for the Atlas - which is worse than useless !!!!).

Anyway thanks for all the effort
Misty :)

Terry has mentioned in previous "Hot Tune of the Week" threads that you can use Real Alternative (www.majorgeeks.com) instead of RealAudio. A search for Terry's other threads will give you more information.

In the words of that well known domestic.."It's being so cheerful as keeps me going" ;)

As a prize for anyone knowing who said that, I'll add another nostalgia site or two.

Thanks, Foxy,
I once knew that but had forgotten. Have now downloaded RealAlternative and will see how she goes ! Hope it does not lead to dispute between the other 'alternatives'. :horrified
cheers

362331 2005-06-13 17:07:00 Quiz, eh?
It's rather before my time, but a glimmer comes from replays when I was a kid of radio shows that were old even then...
1940s, was it? Wartime?
Somebody's lugubrious charlady who was actually far from cheerful...
Was it the Tommy Handley Show?
Aha...How about Mrs Mop?

Afraid I mislead a bit through poor memory, I was also thinking of Mrs Mopp, her catch phrase after knocking at Tommy's door was "Can I do you now Sir?"

But it was Mona Lott who used to say "It's being so cheerful as keeps me going"

You are right Laura, well done, I didn't know whether the program was broadcast here or not, it was ITMA, It's That Man Again, with a host of characters like Colonel Chinstrap, Funf the German spy, and Tommy's right hand man Sam, each with their catch phrases. Good simple fun.

Other favourite programs of mine were Happidrome, Much Binding in The Marsh, Monday Night at Eight, Appointment with Fear, all bring back memories of the smell of kerosine lamps, dark cold nights in the garden shelter, and listening to the radio with imagination working overtime.
I still have that radio, it belonged to my Gran.

Here is the bonus nostalgia site Roaring 20s Concert:

362333 2005-06-15 23:25:00 Hello Terry,
I am trying to find a program that can record and split/filename the stream of dismuke radio in mp3...

I looked everywhere, tried dozens of programs but no results.

Can you help me?
