2005-06-08 11:34:00 | FWIW... Siemens to sell mobile phone unit to Taiwan's BenQ FRANKFURT, Germany -- Siemens AG, struggling with poor sales and declining market share of its mobile phone unit, said Tuesday it will sell the division to Taiwan's BenQ Corp. -- which said the business could break even next year. BenQ President Sheaffer Lee said the company's mobile phone shipments this year would likely exceed 20 million units, including Siemens' shipments in the October-December period. That is more than double BenQ's previous estimate of 10 million units. It appears that BenQ is a much larger company than I thought. But are there any BenQ cellphones in NZ?

2005-06-08 13:40:00 | Acer, or maybe a subsidiary, changed it's name to BenQ, or it might simply be a product line. What "BenQ" means, I have no idea (some idiot who had problems with BenQ once told me it is an abbreviation for "Bend Over - F*ck You"), but Acer is a fairly good company. I suspect though, that they make other people's mobiles, and will probably continue to make mobiles under the "Siemens" brand. | vinref (6194) | |

Sometimes I'll walk through Chinese food shops reading the labels (engRish) on packets just for a few laughs :D |

2005-06-08 22:59:00 | Guess this is old news, but new to me: evidently LG and Philips have merged? see here (www.techspot.com) That's weird,.... because only a few days ago, I read about the progress Philips and TPV Technology are making in their monitor making business. Quick google confirms that indeed they are www.physorg.com [link is somewhat outdated... but thats enough for proof] So when/where does LG come in!?

2005-06-09 00:20:00 | Guess this is old news, but new to me: evidently LG and Philips have merged? see here (www.techspot.com) I think LG Philips is a company separate to either Philips and LG (both continue to exist independently), but which both are the only shareholders - i.e., it is a partnership. It came about from the remains of Philip's disasterous foray into PC's (remember the Philips brand of PCs and laptops and Apple Mac clones?) and LG's interest in entering that market.
