362482 2005-06-10 08:22:00 Final decision: I am NOT going to the ball this year. However, I might give a thought about it next year. Hopefully they are going to lower the cost of a ball ticket.... I am not jealous or hurt of the fact most of my friends are going to the ball, I even plan to go online tomorrow night (the ball is tomorrow) and chat with others. By the way, what does FWIW short for? Thanks people for all the replies!

Cheers :)
As far as I know, ticket prices only go up, and not down. And besides, even if you've just decided you're going to go... I think it might be a bit late for tux hire, etc.

Fat chance! Its always been around the 75-100 dollar mark.

The after-ball drunken doozy is probably what most people buy tickets for.

These days its all booze and snogging. (I didnt go so I dont know)
But I didnt really feel I missed much

362484 2005-06-10 08:26:00 I remember going to my first school ball 44 years ago. While I waited for the young lady that I was taking I spoke with her mother and the tv was on. They were doing a item on the news about the fact that the last trams in Glasgow were going to be running very shortly. Funny how some things stick in the mind.
Mind you I was at a heighened state of awareness and trying to make a good impression with her mum. Anyway had a good time but shortly after she got interested in older boys - as they still do. I did not have the sense then to look around for someone from a younger age group - you do have to move on !

Try things - you may get knocked back by the young ladies - but then at least you know you have tried. And ....who knows ....life is full of surprises !

FWIW, I didn't go to either of the school balls, didn't miss them too much either.

362487 2005-06-10 09:42:00 Look I know uni students who could have easily spent $100 a night on an average beer night.

I'd just go once.

The funny part is how the teachers will make such a fuss about not drinking.

Cheapo plan: just show up to the party afterwards and shout some people drinks.

ah well it doesn' matter too much as High School doesn't really matter despite all the NCEA talk etc.

362488 2005-06-10 10:12:00 Ball's are an excellent place for LAN parties.

Don't forget that.

362489 2005-06-10 10:49:00 When it came for the time of my school ball, last year at boarding skool, I was a moody introverted pseudo-intellectual, superior to everyone else, so I didn't go, I just organised it. Yeah the works, the decorations (underwater theme) in the hostel dining room, the band. Catering was done by the hostel kitchen AFAI can recall, was a long time ago, well '69. I "dropped by" oh so casual to see all these simpletons having fun, make sure e'thing was running smoothly before I went back to the dorm to tuck into Schopenhaur. (SP?)

Had a helluva lot of fun since jameskan, so don't worry about it, if you're not that keen (and getting late to get enthusiastic now) do something else and in the morning you'll be less out of pocket and won't have a headache.

(Not to say that being 'out of pocket' and having an overhang is always bad but.)
In my time type post. :D :D :D

362490 2005-06-10 12:59:00 I never went to the 6th form ball and never regretted it. I went to the 7th form ball but I had a girlfriend, girls seem to be into that sort of thing for some reason. The ball was ok, I mean, I'm not really into the dress and dance crap! I managed to get by with $175 for the night, I was outraged when I totaled the cost considering it was one night, the after ball was worth it though ;). I think thats what most balls are about - the afterparties, some very, very wild activies occur. Good times.

Go to at least one ball, you'd regret it otherwise and its easy to get a girl to goto the ball with you than in normal circumstances. If your into that sort of thing or already a stud with the ladies.

As for paying for the girls ticket - OUTRAGOUS. I would never in my lifetime pay for the girls ticket. The only way I would do something like that was if they cleaned the house and cooked a decent meal first. If they want to revert to 'traditional' values, then its two sided, they have to pull their side of the 'traditional' bargain. Equal rights my ass, girls earn income these days, they can afford to pay for tickets like the rest of the ball-going population. It could also be seen as legal prostituation depending on how you want to look at it!
