362860 2005-06-13 02:12:00 You can still buy woollies if you grub around, like the safety shops as Met says, and a few remaining tramping goods shops, but retail stores like Farmers or Hallensteins long ago dropped that sort of stuff.

Then there are those so-called 'sports shops' chains that advertise noisily on TV where there is no sign of tramping or climbing gear, and all clothing is synthetic stuff.

Swandri and Norsewear are still around but most other woollen goods manufacturers seem to have shut up shop.

I suppose there would be the stock and station agents type shops out in the backblocks of Wairarapa or up the coast in the Manawatu, but most local farms are in the process of, or, now seem to have been subdivided for housing development, or 'life-style' blocks (whatever that stupid phrase means).

Saddletweed trousers are mighty for winter wear at altitude, to pull on at the end of the day, a grey/black flecked woollen tweed material.
If you look at photos of climbers going back to the days of Peter and Alex Graham, that is what they wore. ;)

362862 2005-06-13 02:20:00 Huh! In Invercargill we have Hayes Hardware which has everything a chap needs. Indeed, the father of a mate of mine, who was a ships captain, (and steam engineer in his spare time) said that he never found another shop in the world as good as Hayes. He used to come to Invercargill just for the pleasure of browsing there.

See http://www.ehayes.co.nz/
I was talking to Mohamed Al Fayed, who on hearing about your shop is considering purchasing same and putting next to Harrods.

Bit like the world famous cream trip in the Bay Of Islands, yet to meet anyone who has heard of it. ;)
I hope Terry and oo1 have read the electric motor article.

Mountain guides extraordinaire.

Peter Graham guided the first woman climber Freda du Faur to the top of Mt Cook. He died in 1966.

But surely he was waiting for someone to ask the question?
I just didn't want to keep him in suspenders for too long...

Terry:
Yes, I should've known - or perhaps remembered is a better word, especially the Freda du Faur connection.

362866 2005-06-13 08:25:00 P.S. One of my young relatives, a chopper pilot, was until recently employed flying tourists up to the Tasman Glacier, where they had a walk around in the snow & had their photos taken.
And that's as far up Mt Cook I've been - or am ever likely to get now..

Listen carefully, college boys were quite naughty in those days.

362869 2005-06-13 15:30:00 Well after that, I guess I'll not only have to go & find where I left my old comp's speakers (Haven't rigged the new old one for sound yet) plus make the decision I've been putting off - --

Do I install Windows Media Player (bloated, some of you say), QuickTime (got fed up with it constantly re-invading my Startup last time), RealPlayer (some of you say it invades) or one of the many recommended in a thread this weekend?

I don't need stuff that does fancy stuff. Not at present, anyway.

Seem to remember you had a slimmed-down version of Real, Terry? Care to give details again - or do you have a better one for your jazz?
Otherwise I'll do a Search tomorrow.
