2005-06-10 05:03:00 | You asked the PC World Forum if you should go to the ball? What the hell would we know? Damn dude. My opinion. It's once. You don't get another shot. The only reason I wouldn't go would be if I had a "better offer" -Qyiet

2005-06-10 05:11:00 | Depends on your age whether you go... if you're over 16, you might wanna go for umm... various reasons  ;) When did the law change so that it was 16 and over for both males and females??

2005-06-10 05:33:00 | James, FWIW, here is my suggestion: if you do not go to the ball, do something else that brings enjoyment and satisfaction, and just don't stay at home or watch telly at a mates. That way, when you think about the school ball (this will come up in conversation for many years to come!), you can happily remember what you did instead. Or use the money you save to get whatever-that-is-significant, either more RAM, flowers for your mum (ha!), or a donation to charity. I do agree with the above comment that the ball itself is usually over-rated - it is what happens after, maybe even before, that often is the best time. My own experience was that I planned not to go, for two reasons: I was burned out with relationships at the time, and did not like dancing. Well, bugger me if I did not get an invite by a very attractive girl - I knew her but we were not close friends. I was honest and said I would not dance, but went anyway. Well, it was good, but no big big deal, but at least I do have that good memory. And it was sure better than staying at home! Good luck! We are interested in what happens!

2005-06-10 05:35:00 | JJJJJ Loved your post, Jack. Memories indeed... If it wasn't for the fact that my ball wasn't nearly as long ago (and a certain sex difference), I'd swear we went to the same school. We girls learned our ballroom dancing at lunchtime lessons in the school gym. Tallest girls were the men, of course. The only difference I could see is that we didn't have to keep daylight between us when dancing at the ball. My, you were brave about the kiss. The shy boy I asked to partner me (no brothers with useful friends) didn't dare...

2005-06-10 05:38:00 | This post brings back memories  It can be very expensive, you pay for the ticket and your partner's even if its your sis or friend, per ticket $80-120 each. You then may have the extra expense of the afterball which maybe a opened bar pool .. perhaps $25 a person for that. The tux hire, mine back those yrs (10yrs) was few hundred for a night hire (Frank Casey). The limo or the taxi, you need to get there and get back right (both pple)? Perhaps a carsage - that flower you give to your partner too ... You can get a lot of computer toys with that money :nerd: What happens after the ball? You may have 6 months left for school, 7th form I take it and then you are moving on .. be it working or further educ. IMO its kind of a show for participation from the other students and teachers and organisers involved. I was from a guys only school. That girl I took to the ball never seen her again after the ball, really! I find that after high school is better becos there are many more pple who choose to go or not to go .. so you can be yourself. You may go to the pub or stay at home or go to the movies .. with friends or with perhaps a partner you may have met up with. Yes, given the cost of the tux rental, why not buy it, sure you have some other use for it later on ... Ours were like in October or such .. hardly seen my high school pple, as I moved to another city for varisty for a couple of yrs. Now my friends are all around NZ or locate abroad doing normal things what pple do. I say ask yourself honestly. What happens after the ball night and after these 6 months and you move away from high school? If you wanna met a chick, you've got far better ways and cheaper ways of doing than going to a ball with someone whom you can't even name now, or maybe that person is jsut to fill in the blank invitation card or maybe is it a blind date that many school co-ord with a brother/sister college/high school? Kinda beauracratic. For a laugh, I would like to get started building my PC :D Still have my laptop from varisty.

2005-06-10 07:34:00 | My school ball came and went without me even noticing. Was having a ball every weekend, Satan himself couldn't have dragged me along to a school sponsered dance....

2005-06-10 07:41:00 | Our school ball wasn't a school function it was organised by the students and only invited teachers attended, it was held at the plaza international, no problems sticking to school rules that way! | plod (107) | |
2005-06-10 07:57:00 | Final decision: I am NOT going to the ball this year. However, I might give a thought about it next year. Hopefully they are going to lower the cost of a ball ticket.... I am not jealous or hurt of the fact most of my friends are going to the ball, I even plan to go online tomorrow night (the ball is tomorrow) and chat with others. By the way, what does FWIW short for? Thanks people for all the replies! Cheers :)
