657290 2008-04-09 11:17:00 My vote goes to Ubuntu, Mainly cause its the only one I have used in the last 12 months.

Very slick, easy to install, easy to get around and find everything.

Though i went back to XP for a couple of reasons, Mainly my video editing apps, and my TV app, Plus, I kept on breaking my Linux install.:clap

Need a good internet connection to get all the updates and configure the apps to your ideal setup.

While I'm here, I messed around with the Gimp a couple of times, Once you get a feel (via a few basic online tutorials) for how she works under the hood she starts to shine, For my needs I think I could use it as a replacement for Photoshop.

657292 2008-04-10 02:52:00 Hello
I did have a look at different OS's and I like to support the vote for PCLOS. If you keep with the standard applications(text, web, email e.g.) it is a very nice option. Simple and solid! On top of that you will have first choice support through the PCLOS forum.

657293 2008-04-10 03:35:00 As you will have gathered the "loves" of linux users are varied.I have been a linux user for many years and would think for a convert PCLos would suit but once you try then the bug will get you and you will wonder about all the others.Ubuntu,is the basis for most distros and has thousands of people working in the background to improve it.The deviants like PCLos have small teams working to improve performance and refine different areas of the core ubuntu system.Just try any well known OS and you will be hooked.Windows is not necessary to do anything on the internet and linux does most things better and safer. kjaada (253)
657294 2008-04-10 06:12:00 Ubuntu is the basis for most distros...Huh? It's the basis of a few, certainly, but not even approaching most. Not even a large percentage. By far the majority of distros are based on either Debian or Redhat.

...and has thousands of people working in the background to improve it.The deviants like PCLos have small teams working to improve performance and refine different areas of the core ubuntu system.Up to a point, but Ubuntu is, to some extent, a 'deviant' itself. They fork Debian unstable (sid) every six months and base their distros off that.

657295 2008-04-10 07:01:00 I'd also like to add that the standard PCLOS is NOT based on ubuntu, but rather Mandriva. Sherman (9181)
657296 2008-04-10 08:08:00 I'd also like to add that the standard PCLOS is NOT based on ubuntu, but rather Mandriva.... and Mandriva was base on Red Hat. :p Jen (38)
657297 2008-04-10 10:18:00 And here is a link (pclosmag.com) to a list of distros based on PCLinuxOS. mikebartnz (21)
657298 2008-04-10 18:07:00 This semi technical talk is just the thing to put off a prospective convert.
The heritage is not all that important what is important is to get a newbee going
with a linux OS.

657299 2008-04-10 19:20:00 Is Hardy Heron out yet? Or is Gutsy Gibbon still the current release?

Hardy Heron will be out in a couple of weeks ,if all goes according to schedule
