657123 2008-04-09 05:29:00 just remember, response time and especially contrast ratio means little when looking at LCD's. This is because there is so set standard yet, and manufacturers can tweak their testing to achieve desired results.
one example is a manufacturer that states a 10.000:1 contrast ratio, while testing reveals typical ratio to be 700:1.

I know it's a pain, but my advice is to look at different monitors in store, compare them there and trust your own eyes.

657124 2008-04-09 05:37:00 Ah. Necessary.
I have a 19" CRT and 2 x 8800GTS 512mbs.
Can't say whether or not it was necessary came into the decision.......:D

What resolution are you using PCtek with that 19crt, anything under 1080p and you are wasting the SLI, unless of course we are talking Crysis!

Isn't that just the difference between dynamic/static contrast ratio, and comparing like for like? I know atleast that I can spot the difference without having to resort any crazy technical wizzywads between my current Samsung 740N display with 8ms response time and a friends 206BW with a 2ms response time, but from experience, 100% agreed to physically compare them with the same feed rather than shuffling through specs, what you think is miles better could turn out to be worse. I was unable to judge the difference in the contrast ratio between the panels, so similar, though that 206 looked slightly better to me, it could have just been that glossy screen vs. my matt screen, who knows.

^'Test' situation was on Win XP PC both moinitors were plugged in one at a time into my PC, used RGB connection for both to keep it fair since my 740N lacks a DVI interface which may/may not have helped differentiate the panels further, played Unreal 2004/GTR2.

657126 2008-04-10 08:04:00 Man, I think you totally scared everyone away from posting on this thread.
Its gonna take them so long to read your post, that by the time they're finished, the hardware will be obsolete!

No harm intended lol! :p

657127 2008-04-10 08:36:00 Damn >_< Sorry for ruining your thread then. Shouldn't be too hard to read though, I try to use best grammar/punctuation possible no matter what form of communication I use. Hope it's not an issue :P

It's 165 words damnit!

657128 2008-04-10 21:22:00 I'm getting 2 8800GT's but I'd be more concerned with the fps and antialiasing as compared to the res.
I've heard that this (www.nzoczone.com) is a good screen. 22" Widescreen with 2ms response time. 2000:1 contrast etc and only $432.39 at oczone

22' WS = 1680*1050, 1 8800GT is still enough for all games at that resolution. You have SLI, you need 24" 1080p (1920*1080) resolution to make use of the SLI GT's!

Would someone kindly tell me where in ChCh there is such a store where different monitors can be compared side to side because I certainly can't find any. :(

And I'm not talking about the monitors that are part of brand-name systems being sold, either.

Do you guys not have any of those large retail chain stores there? If you got o places like DSE/NL on a quiet afternoon or morning time, you'll probably be able to find someone that can set up whatever you want to see side by side for comparison. I know both stock a couple other models besides the standard HP/Compaq stuff. Should see some Samsung/AOC, don't know about the other brands there though.
