362850 2005-06-11 08:13:00 The Alex Thompson firm in Dunedin made great oiled japara parkas for many years (Alexto brand)but sadly the firm is long gone.

Happily, I still have my 70s model - though I confess its good condition comes from being in a drawer for yonks, rather than on my back.

362851 2005-06-12 08:21:00 Thankyou everyone. Even the motel aficionados. ;) Good thoughts.

Steve - that solution sounds worth checking out. I might try it on part of the tent. Sal-soda = carbonate of soda?

Terry - thanks for reminding me. I applied Wettex from Glendermid several years ago and it worked. Probably the most simple solution (pun intended) :D

I did carry a Warehouse cover for the floor at Queens Birthday. But a bit heavy for tramping.

And I also have a japara coat (oil-skin) which sits under one of the seats of my 4WD. Very light and handy in the wet. I bought some Dri-z-bone solution once and it seemed to water-proof the coat very well. But didn't know about Barbour Thornproof Dressing so learned something today.

Cheers
Winston

But that's an American price rip off. I paid NZ$14.35 for my tin from Dwights Canvass Goods in Upper Hutt, and it's much further to ship from UK to here compared from UK to US. However the tin is identicle

Huh! In Invercargill we have Hayes Hardware which has everything a chap needs. Indeed, the father of a mate of mine, who was a ships captain, (and steam engineer in his spare time) said that he never found another shop in the world as good as Hayes. He used to come to Invercargill just for the pleasure of browsing there.

OMG, you are indeed lucky, I haven't seen an all can-do shop like that for years, none like that around Upper Hutt anymore, or anywhere around the Wellington region afaik.

Gone are the days when you could go into Farmers, Wrightsons, Hallensteins, James Smiths or our local Hazelwoods, etc etc and actually buy woollen goods like bushshirts, or saddletweed trousers, and other tramping gear.

362858 2005-06-13 01:27:00 Another vote for Hayes, Winston.
I still have the warm blue balaclava I got there years ago.
Sadly a mouse also fancied it as nesting material, so it has a few extra holes. Next time I get to Invercargill...
A wonderful shop indeed- and that's not even counting the famous Hayes fence strainers.

Terry - Don't you have any farm supply or stock firms' outlets on the outskirts of the city? Places like CRT (Combined Rural Traders), Pyne Gould Guinness, Wrightsons etc here still have the woolly & hard-wearing stuff for farmers.
The PRICE nowadays is another thing, of course...

Im not even going to ask what saddletweed trousers are but for woolen gear, thermals, bushshirts, tramping gear etc you can simply head into your local saftey shop, There are number of them dotted around Wellington. Some with more stock/gear then others.
