658431 2008-04-13 09:20:00 How does one repair the boot sector of a hard drive that has windows 95 on it?

The drive detects fine by BIOS and is accessable via bootable floppy disk, but when trying to actually boot from the hard drive I just get:

"Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key"

I tried fdisk /mbr but there was no change...

658436 2008-04-13 23:51:00 I'd rather avoid running commands before I know exactly what they do..

658438 2008-04-14 03:05:00 When I did the PC .. in those days.

I got a systems disk - like a Windows 95/98 or whatever startup disk.

Boot it .. and type "format c:/s" - that would format and copy sys files.

Then just install windows.

*If you get a windows 98 startup disk it should have cd drivers attached. Upon boot it ask you do you want to boot with them or not ....

If you are using fat16 with windows 95 .. when you go into fdisk.exe and it ask you if you want to support larger disks - choose no.

one would question the need to fix a win95 system.....

the error can be caused by many things.
best move is to hook the drive up the another PC and see if you have any data.
if the drive looks dead then checkout "spin rite" from grc.com
if the drive looks good the do s sys c: from a boot floppy.

all else fails then hook up to another PC, backup what you can and format the drive.

658440 2008-04-14 07:15:00 Sys C:? what does that do?

It copies the boot files from your floppy disc to the C:
io.sys - msdos.sys - command.com and may also do config.sys and autoexec.bat

It doesn't delete or format anything.
