658182 2008-04-12 08:59:00 Evenin Folks!

Have an annoying issue at the moment. I have an SMC wireless router that services a desktop pc (wired) and a laptop (wireless).

When ive enabled WEP on the router, the laptop can't access the net. But it can still access network files/folders on the pc.The router interestingly doesn't show the laptop as a client with a 192.x.x.x address. Just the pc and it's 192.x.x.x address. The laptop has a an IP of 169.x.x.x

When i disable WEP, the laptop can access the net fine. The router shows the laptop as a client with a 192.x.x.x.

Anyone have an idea whats happening?

Running XP Pro on pc and laptop.

Router is an SMC Barricade G wireless router

658183 2008-04-12 09:04:00 Try This----

What you need to do is when the laptop is connected with no security (WEP) open the connection and disconnect it.

Then try to connect to the router / Scan for networks, and you should see your Network (what ever you called it) click to connect and you should be asked for the KEY, put in what ever it is and it should connect.

If you don't disconnect from the unsecured setting it will be trying to connect on the old settings.

658185 2008-04-12 09:14:00 Did you put the ip in manually??

Sounds like its on obtain an ip

Give the laptop an ip within the router's ip range (type the ip in, dont put it on obtain an ip)

Because if its on obtain an ip, the laptop when u reboot, its ip will probably change all the time.

658186 2008-04-12 09:41:00 Bring up the Control Panel --> Network Connections
Right-click on the Wireless Network connection and goto Properties
Click Wireless Network, then click on your network and goto Properties.

Somewhere in there it will let you manually specify the WEP key. Try that, and as speedy said you should try specifying an IP Address :)

658188 2008-04-12 10:25:00 If your router supports it, you should change to WPA-PSK since WEP can be cracked in several minutes these days. johnd (85)
658189 2008-04-12 11:43:00 hi johnd, it does but im living in an area that isnt exactly affluential so very unlikely but hey anythings possible!

chill and speedy, i put in a manual ip but it doesnt show up in the router's client list, it connects after confirming the key though

in the router it shows the following

INTERNET
Cable/DSL: CONNECTED
WAN IP: 10.1.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.1.1.1
Primary DNS: 10.1.1.1
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

GATEWAY
IP Address: 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server: Enabled
Firewall: Enabled
UPnP: Enabled
Wireless: Enabled

in the laptop in the tcp/ip properties, which subnet mask do i put and the gateway?

658190 2008-04-12 11:48:00 I would put 255.0.0.0 and the gateway 10.1.1.1

On the laptop

The primary DNS server may work with 10.1.1.1, or put your ISP's primary DNS server IP in here.

For the alternate DNS IP, put your ISP's secondary DNS server IP in here.

If u know what it is

658191 2008-04-12 12:57:00 okayyyy finally got it working

i think the wep setting must somehow be corrupted on either the router or the laptop. i changed to wpa which ive never used before and it worked.. the laptop can now use the internet.

thanks all for the help!
