| 657948 | 2008-04-11 10:08:00 | I have 2x XP installs on seperate physical drives (C: and G: ), one is partitioned (it has C: and D: ) but xp is on the primary partition. The other has no partition (G: ). At the moment I can boot into only the C: install. My boot.ini looks like this [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Matt - XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Sarz - XP" /fastdetect What should it look like? |

| 657949 | 2008-04-11 10:22:00 | This is a normal boot.ini for one hdd timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect [B]Which one do u want to keep ? Or which one are u selecting ? I take it you want to remove an entry ? If youre selecting the top one, (this multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Matt - XP" /fastdetect ) Delete the bottom one, (this - multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Sarz - XP" /fastdetect ) Or vice-versa |

Different in my opinion. Could you enligten me as to how and why you installed two versions of XP G: has a partition anyway but not more than one I guess. It rather depends on whether you set up the second physical hard drive as an extended or primary. Did you set these two hard drives in a raid array? You very definitely have two physical hard drives. What optical drives do you have? If G has no partition then I fail to see how you can install anything and I would also ask how do you know it is G: if not partitioned? |

This person has two hard drives as was said. At this stage I asked questions to elicit information. |

| 657952 | 2008-04-11 10:45:00 | Yer so? His question sounds a bit screwed up, and doesnt make sense ! Which is why I asked if he wanted to remove an entry. Coz I dont actually know what he wants ! Or what he's talking about I think what he meant by G having no partition, is it has something on it, but its one partition, not 2 like C and D ? So, he's probably trying to get the entries right in boot.ini so he can select from either. So, both boot But what he's got now looks nothing like whats its meant to look like in boot.ini |

| 657953 | 2008-04-11 10:53:00 | Ok, I'll tell the story from the start eh? I had a PC with one install of XP, and my wife had another PC with one install of XP . She likes her PC and how it's set up (and content), I like mine and how it's set up (and content) . What we both don't like at the moment is the amount of room a 2nd PC is taking up . So, my answer to the problem was to add her hard drive to my PC (as mine has the better specs) and create a dual boot, one with her XP install, and one with mine . So, I've installed her hard drive as a slave (by changing the jumper) and I have edited the boot . ini as show above . Except it doesn't seem to boot her install, but boots mine . Update: I changed the boot . ini to this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Matt - XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Sarz - XP" /fastdetect . . . restarted and crossed my fingers . I then got a blue screen (which I couldn't red as it disappeared so fast) and the PC restarted . Her HDD seems to be working fine as I can access it from my install, just cant get it to boot . That help? |

| 657954 | 2008-04-11 10:56:00 | ... But what he's got now looks nothing like whats its meant to look like in boot.ini I just edited it how I thought it should logically work, and crossed my fingers. I guess I should have learned by now, that nothing in Windows is ever logical. :p |

| 657955 | 2008-04-11 11:04:00 | Change the 2nd one multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Sarz - XP" /fastdetect To this multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Sarz - XP" /fastdetect See if that works |

The other hard drive was in another rig apparently. I do not believe that changing the boot.ini will help in my humble opinion. BTW I do know how to dual boot and I do know that you can't just take a hard drive out of another rig and it will dual boot as such. Driver and motherboard issues for example. |

I was just gonna say that  If both PC's had the exact same hardware you would be fine, but as mentioned the PC as it is now has "Better Hardware" theres a very high chance of driver conflicts as the OS is trying to load drivers that are simply not there. |
