364493 2005-06-17 02:04:00 I'm sure there are people here who enjoy laughing at others misfortunes and if there are, then here's your chance. I haven't seen this topic raised before so please fell free to share your 'misfortune'.

Now I'm not a masochist or anything like that but I happened to step on a manhole cover this morning that gave way. I'm not paranoid or anything like that but I don't normally step on them, for this exact reason, but in this case it was a great big metallic plate, it looked sturdy enough, and I was doing the right thing by moving aside to let someone past.

What happened next is beyond description other than the feeling of pure unbridled pain ripping up my leg. Suffice to say I had the wherewithall not to let fly with every expletive I know in front of a number of children - although every word and a few more certainly came to mind. I now have three bandages on my leg, an egg on the front of my shin (not to mention my face), plus according to Dr Sterling, a torn hamstring. So here I am enjoying a day off with my leg up in front of the PC - whilst I should be happy at this prospect, there is this inner turmoil that says 'yes you are front of your PC so you should be happy but something isn't quite right'

If there is anything I can be thankful for is that it was me and not a child, although a child may not have been heavy enough to tip the cover. And being on school grounds, what did I learn from this? Don't step on goddamn manhole friggin' covers for ****'s sake!

The horizonallty aligned, Andrew

364494 2005-06-17 02:35:00 Hi Andrew. ACC I take it? And a sharp detailed letter to the Council, possibly a photograph of the offending cover, in place and when a weight is applied to it and it opens or moves, etc. Any losses will be credited by the Council. If not, a small claims court case, etc. My local Council reluctantly reimbursed over $1200 to me and my insurance company recently for somewhat similar after a small claims judgement slated them for lack of or improper maintenance. Scouse (83)
364495 2005-06-17 02:47:00 sorry to hear, thankfully you doidn't break a leg or hip which is easly done.

as already mentioned take it up with the council. there was a case recently where a over had fallen in, apparantly the council don't check them regular and requires people to notify them of an cases. it would have been nice if they told us that in the first place!

at least you may enojoy a day of quiet ;)

364496 2005-06-17 03:09:00 I add my sympathy, Andrew - plus a question.

Why an egg on your leg?

I know ice works well for bruising.
And we've all heard of "steak for a black eye," though I've no idea if it works.
But an egg..?

Is this a protein thing - or an energy-saving way of cooking lunch?

364497 2005-06-17 03:46:00 Thanks for the sympathy everyone - not that I am seeking that, I was hoping for more stories (I guess partly to make me fell better about myself). An egg? Rather than a remedial thing it better describes the lump I have on my shin....but I think you knew that. It might have to be a few drugs (purely medicinal) and / or a big Bailey's tonight to get me to sleep.
Cheers
A

364498 2005-06-17 04:26:00 stories....mmmm....

last year while out hunting in the bush i was walking along the edge of the bank of the river and i stepped in a hole. i went up to my thighs in it (only one leg) but my weight was still going forward so i did a very slow twist and roll like it was in slow motion. kinda werid feeling as it was so slow but i couldn't do a thing to stop it. very lucky not to have popped my knee out. mate who was with me couldn't stop laughing.

364499 2005-06-17 05:13:00 Heh heh heh.

As a kid I was out and about on my pushy, had a brainwave and reached down to check the slack in the chain with my fingers, which got caught and went around the sproket, and pinned my arm around the back of my leg.

Time for brainwave number 2.

Yank my fingers out.

Muhahahah.

Stripped em down to the bone, had a small amount of munched flesh hanging by skin on 2 fingers, with the bone poking out of the end of my fingers.

At that point in my life I had never seen blood squirt so far.....Lmfao.

364500 2005-06-17 05:19:00 It's been a few hours since your first post, is the bottle still full in front of you :D

And I must add, bad luck mate, what next your internet connection goes hay-wire, that would realy finish your day.

A few years ago my brother and I were tramping near Otria in the Southern Alps when I giggered my knee, couldnt even put any weight on it, I slipped over on a boulder and was luckie not to have split my nut open.

Anyway it was getting late and we wernt far from the next hut so after strapping my leg up with a splint and making a walking stick we continued about 10meters, when my bro decided it was best if he carried both packs(thank god).

Next day (pig headed kiwi chaps as we were) we made our way out, after about 4-5 hours travelling about .5km per hour we saw a 4X4 making its way along the riverbed.

Nice chap saw we were in a little strife and offered us a ride to the road. In we jumped, he was so freindly he not only took us to the road but back to his house for a coffee. Then loaded us back into his Hilux and drove us to Hoki where we had arranged a ride home, this was at least a 150km round trip out of his way.

Leg healed up OK, but just goes to show you you never know whats just around the corner.

364501 2005-06-17 05:26:00 Got two of my finger's stuck in between two cylinders on a printing press, absolutly **** my pants and yanked my fingers out, instead of reversing machine.
Results: I like to call it the squashed tomatoe effect, abit of missing bone, skin and finger nail
and 8 weeks off work

364502 2005-06-17 05:53:00 Oooooooh i hate pain and blood, but you did get me to squirm and laugh a little, which made me forget how dreadful my day has been.......

Hope you all recover nicely....with a bottle of something to take the pain or memories away.....

The only thing i ever remember that caused greif, or pain was concussion ...going over handlebars of me new, unbought (test run) motor bike....no helmit...managed to get 3 days off school.....and loss of memory for the whle 3 days.....even the accident..... vaguely remember flying and smack.....
The things we do....
still bought the bike tho...:D

and a helmit.
