364216 2005-06-15 11:33:00 WARNING LONG RANT (all about life in the E-World)

I just noticed that my life might be too electronic........

i heard a beep, my brain decided that the food in the microwave was cooked, problem was thatr there was nothing in the microwave.......

I spent sevral minutes trying to decied waht the beep was made by, not my computer, not my cellphone, not the cordless phone, not my PDA and not any clock in the room.......

then the beep went again, and this time I noticed it was the somke alarm.

I then spent a moment and thought about how electronic my life is, I use computers 10-12 hours a day 7 days a week. I cant remember the last time i had a day with no computer access of any sort.
I check my email with in an hour of getting up, and check it last thing at night.
I have a cellphone on 24/7, radio or MP3 player on most of the day, all sorts of things that beep to keep my to some timetable.

I have decied as an experement that i will try a day unpluged. 24 hours with no electronics of any sort. no phone and no internet. basicly nothing invented after 1950 :-) I will get up when i wakeup and go to bed when i am tired.

I feel that this will be a good way to relax and might give me some insight as to how much tech i have in my life.

this saturday i will unplug for 24 hours and see what happens.

will i relax and have a fun day?
will i change my life so as to use less tech?

will i go mad and sulk all day?
will i decied to was the dumbest thing ever?
will i make a day each month to do this?

I am sure most of you dont care and dont know why i have made this post.

I think that some of you might want to try it too, and i think some of you will be interested as to how i get on.

i am interested in your thoughts........

364217 2005-06-15 11:37:00 You are a very brave person :) kumaraguy (4464)
364218 2005-06-15 12:30:00 That sounds interesting, Derek.

But you will need to go out & DO something, surely?
Otherwise, you might go stir-crazy if you just stay at home beside the phone that won't ring, the blank monitor & TV screen & the cold microwave.

Visiting friends is good. So is gardening - weather permitting - and going to a film or sight-seeing.
(I've a list of local places which tourists visit, but I've never been to... yet.)
A nice sunny day may make all the difference.

364219 2005-06-15 12:32:00 And I forgot the most obvious activity if the weather's bad.
Remember books..?

364220 2005-06-15 20:42:00 Good on you Derek. I do this on occasion because sometimes I just have to get away from technology - off with the PC's and cellphone and everything else that is an intrusion. Will you go mad? No. What you will find is that suddenly you have all this time you didn't have before. As Laura suggested you will need to find something to do with all of this extra time you just created. Enjoy and be sure to post back.

364221 2005-06-15 21:48:00 I say go for it. Take yourself off somewhere really remote, away from the city
and breath in the fresh air.

364222 2005-06-16 07:10:00 Well youre are a brave person . . . .

Unfortunately i am not able to do that as business is always here, phones, fax, computers are always on and people come to the door and the beepers go . . . . 24 / 7 and if i want a day out, i need to pay someone to come look after the place and be contactable by phone for the whole time i am out, hence why we have only had one weekend off in 2 1/2 years . . . . apart from the expence . . . !!!

But the dream is going to happen one day for me . . . . i will leave and not look back . . . :p ha

We really dont realise just how much we rely on these technolgy machines . . . . and if one breaks down . . . oh quick get it fixed . . . . like over the weekend the dishwasher broke down . . horror i had to wash dishe's by hand . . :p on Monday hubby rang and got it fixed . . . . . . . he couldnt handle it .

the cordless phone is playing up . . . . quick get a new one he says . . . .

the microwave . . . 4 in 4 weeks . . . . . lol replaced rather smartly too . . .

what about cars? we rely on the enormously . . . .

an insulated house?

where does one draw the line ?????

:D

364223 2005-06-16 11:05:00 Good on ya Rob! I believe most of need to do this once in awhile. It would be easiest to do this while camping or staying over at a mountain hut or a tiny tropical island or a retreat centre! In any event, we will be interested to see how you go with your experiment. Strommer (42)
364224 2005-06-16 12:19:00 hmmmmm Get up late, do things slowly, take a walk to local sites and tourist spots, spend the day taking pictures or admiring the scenery...

Come home tired, get some takeaways, have a nice hot shower and go to bed early...

Thats how my Devonport day went ;)

364225 2005-06-16 22:43:00 As others have said, the trick is to have something planned to do . If you have nothing to do, or nothing you are enthusiastic about doing, then it won't work . Boredom will dissolve the best of intentions .

The best way to achieve your mission is to get out of the house away from everything so that the temptation to buckle and turn on the computer "just to check my emails" cannot happen . When you are out busy doing something enjoyable you will find that you won't even think about your computer, electronics, etc .

Just make sure you stick to your plan and keep your resolve when you return home . :D

Good luck and have lots of fun .
